Now I love that future, intelligent, deep, 'post' Dubstep sound as much as the next man but every now and then you just want to load up the iPod with a bunch of Thugstep tunes and go swaggering into the local supermarket doing trolley drive-bys with a pack of baby bells (is that just me?). What better soundtrack than this new pre-tour mix from Trillbass. Can download a full tracklisting here.
Plus here's a little taster with their dutty skanked out Pah’Je remix.
Still feeling fairly Glastonburied after our festival weekend but sure we shall come alive long enough to tell you all about it some day soon. In the meantime here's a couple of Gorillaz remixes from our London dwelling compadre The Last Skeptik. I managed to catch them live just before our set (Monky and Stagga arrived about 30 seconds before we played thanks to Easyjet, but that's another story) and was mightily impressed with the guests they managed to pull together for it: Lou Reed; Mark E Smith; Bobby Womack; Shaun Ryder; Yukimi Nagano (Little Dragon); Bootie Brown(The Pharcyde);Kano; Bashy; Snoop Dogg; and De La Soul amongst others. Shame no Mos Def or Gruff Rhys but then there's not much room for complaining with that kind of line up.
For all those budding producers suffering from the age old problem that your partner is pissed off about all the time spent in the studio, have no fear. The Dopplerpad seems to be just about the best music making iPhone app out there and by the sounds of their new Outer Spaces EP, featuring tracks by Eskmo, Exillon, Jneiro Jarel and Starkey made exclusively on the app, you could now make some of the best new digitally mutated beats from the safety of your toilet, shopping queue or bus to work. You can download the whole EP for free here but we've included the Starkmeister's selection as a taster.
Speaking of Starkey, we are most impressed with his latest Sub FMmix which features 2 tracks each from both Monky and Stagga plus our good friendMr Healan, a relatively new face for anyone outside of the Cardiff scene who is fast making a respectable name for himself.
Our favourite cyder drinking Bristolian Parker has been busy on the refix tip again! This time he’s taken 60s Dutch prog rockers Focus and flipped them one time into a summer smashing drum & bass party starter. If you don't know the original it's used in the Nike Write the Future World Cup ad and featured in Parker's mighty The Butler Did It Mix
Classic rock meets DnB? Must be festival season! Speaking of which don't forget the Chrome Kids will be rocking the spot at Glasto this weekend and also you can catch Parker on the West Dance stage on Saturday.
The Associated Minds boys are canny lads. Whilst there has been something of a Hip-hop drought of late they have been stock piling some serious tunes to unleash on us all. I say this with a certain amount of guess work, a touch of faith and the slightest bit of actual knowledge. You see they've been keeping their cards closer to their chest than Nicole Kidman playing Strip Poker. We keep catching glimpses, although it might not be wise to use any kind of nipple analogy when referring to some of their rappers.
The latest snippet to sneak out of the stable is this Metabeats produced crunked up funk bumper. The Lollipop Lady’s Favourite is the first single from Willo Wispa’s eagerly anticipated Wot’s Willo On!?! album and features our favourite jazzy Welsh starlet in the making Ruby Samba.
The tune is a while heap of fun and we can't wait for the video which looks like it's going to be triple jokes galore if this 'Making of' is anything to go by...
Our good friend, DJ Moneyshot, shows no sign of letting off the pressure as he supplies us with another exclusive dope track. This time he's upped the ante of mid nineties Wu-Banger, C.R.E.A.M, with the original piano lick sample, washes of sub and some neck snap uptempo breaks. He's dubbed it 'The Travesty Remix' 'cos as he says himself, "It's a bloody travesty that people mess with the classics, but it's gotta be done."
Plus if you want to hear the track in full context, check his latest show for Solid Steel Radio, which shows us that the best way up is definitely sideways.

Believe it or not, we here at Chrome Kids are not built 100% perfect, so that despite best intentions, some of the tracks we may have decided to blog get lost amidst a pile of work, rest and playing the next couple of hundred tunes to come through that day. This happened some time ago with tracks from the Purple Bird label whom we found by chance then hit up for some music, only for it to be buried til this morning when this Dead Geoff & Mister Thumbs track popped up randomly on our iTunes. It's great, so here it is... finally.
Check the Purple Bird Musicsite for full download of the EP and some of their other artists. Plus there's some damn fine Glitch hop worth listening to on their Soundcloud page, such as this one...
If you happen to be in San Diego you may have caught Monky doing his thing over the weekend already but he's not done with the West Coast of the USA just yet. He will be playing out above Paradise Lounge in San Francisco tomorrow (Wednesday 9th)and The Airliner in LA on Saturday 12th. It's his first trip out there to DJ so if you're any place close make sure you reach out and show him some love.
In true exchange student fashion, back here in Chrome Mansions we've been listening to two of our favourite West Coast amigos. Bassnectar and Troublemaker (or rather his crew King Fantastic and their new album which is....erm... fantastic).
With less wobble but just as much weight as his club destroyers, Lorin from Bassnectar hit us up with his new remix for Sleigh Bells that carries off a summer floaty vibe but with a rather menacing undercurrent.
You'll have to wait a few more days before you can get your hands on the full album from King Fantastic(June 15th to be precise) but here one of their tracks gets the full HavocNdeeD treatment, flipping their 'Westcoastsynthesizerbeachbumgangstermusic' into Stompindubstepbutstillgangstermusic
Finally a special treat as the two forces combine for this King Fantastic remix of Bass Head by Bassnectar. Killer Reese One's West Coast gangster rhymin' style suits the stank as hell beat just perfectly.
Also, whilst Monky has been off trapsing the States, Stagga has been making his way round the other side of the world and will be finishing off in Melbourne on Saturday. Here's the flyer with the info...
Despite these travels, everyone will be making it back to the UK for a full Chrome Kids line up at Glastonbury this year. Friday night 1am at the Bassline Dome in Shangri La.

Once upon a time there were little things called genres. They helped to put life into little boxes and kept things organised. Particularly pleased with this was Radio 1. It let them easily explain what each of the shows were supposed to be doing and who should be listening to what. Of course John Peelpaid no attention to this but that’s fine cos he was easily categorised as ‘the one who broke the rules’.
Recently however it seems that the rules have been bended, twisted and turned every which way but loose and nobody knows what’s what. Dubstep became House and Techno became Hip-hop and Jazz became Rave, then they all became some confusing hybrid of everything. So where does this leave the poor Radio 1 DJs? Gilles Peterson starts becomingMary Anne Hobbs,Annie Mac becomes Zane Lowe and John Peel is left beyond the grave chuckling at the mayhem he helped to create and the station’s attempts to contain his efforts within just two DJs (even if they are the fantastic Huw StephensandRob Da Bank).
For us however it's a fantastic spectacle to see some of our favourite artists gaining exposure across the board and one such example of this is the latest selection thatAlex Stevenson from Patchwork Pirates has put together for the pioneering ‘future jazz’ label Brownswood, ran by his boss and all round musical legend, Gilles Peterson.
Despite being tricky to pin down musically, it is possible to easily accept the flow and musical current that ties Brownswood Electr*ctogether. Most of the artists have grown out of the ‘post’ Hip-hop and ‘post’ Dubstep categories that have been wandering the internet desperately trying to find their own individual tags but failing miserably thanks to a production ethos that is more fluid than the creative juices of us lowly writers. Tribal and Tropical rhythms, Garage Step, Rave Stabs, Jazzy Synths, Soulful Vocals and the occasional gnarly Bassline all find a place on this album, often at the same time and a quality line up of guests includes current golden boys such as Mosca, Von D, Mount Kimbie, Pearson Sound (better known under his Ramadanman moniker), Shlohmo and even 16bit (who fits surprisingly well amongst the rest) along with the next wave of names on everyone’s lips such as Eliphino, George Fitzgerald and Rockwell(who we’ve only just realised is our old amigo from Cardiff, now living down in London). Very similar in atmosphere Fabric's Elevatoralbum, this is going to be the perfect accompaniment to a blazing hot summer.
Speaking of Eliphino, we shall be heading down to check him out at the Beachbreak Live Launch Party tomorrow at CAI so have been rinsing out a few of his productions here at Chrome Mansions. He’s certainly switched up since his days at First Word Records, where he was more on a Dilla-esque Instrumental Hip-hop tip. Nowadays it seems he’s floating around the 130bpm region making the kind of deep dance tracks that sit some place between Garage, Dubstep, Broken Beat and the sort of Tribal and Tropical groove that reminds you of Carnival at dusk. Here’s a little taster plus a free download of his new Randomer & Fife remix courtesy of XLR8R.
Also from the Brownswood stable comes this Free EP from Ghostpoet, a Midlands artist now based in London who managed to charm his way into Gilles Peterson’s All Winners Broadcast with his blazed out poetical journeys over off kilter beats. Kind of like Galliano for the now generation, so you can see why Gilles was impressed, as are we. This introductory 4 track EP includes an appearance from ultra cool pop producer / songstress Micachu and a reworking of the classic Tribe track Electric Relaxation.
Although we are definitely feeling the new Glitch Mob album here in Chrome Mansion we know a few of you out there were less than chuffed with their change in direction that meant a lack of ‘glitches, crazy edits or bizarre effects’ and less of a club selection. If that was you then keep an ear out for the new album from Kraddythat’s due to drop on Alpha Pupsoon. Although we’re yet to hear the album ourselves, we know he’s still very much a fan of the ‘glitch’ in his music and if this exclusive mash up he passed us is anything to go by then all those elements will be in full effect on the ex Mob-ster’s next offering.
