Festival Fun: Saving The Best Til Last

For anyone heading over to Bestival for the Weekend we shall be rocking the Chai Wallah tent on Thursday at 6.30pm and then Bestival Radio at 10pm on Saturday. We're taking Astroid Boys with us too so prepare for a hyper than hype set and some serious festival tomfoolery afterwards. As always the line up is second to none with headline slots from The Prodigy, Dizzee Rascal and Flaming Lips, however we're more small tent frequenters,so just as well there's plenty of crazy little off the wall areas to discover. Although we're a bit anti planning when it comes to festivals choosing to discover stuff by chance, some of our friends, family and favourites are all there so you might well catch us checking out some of these acts.

Winging It

In the ever murky marriage of art, music and corporate sponsorship it has to be said one company are showing themselves to be remarkably in tune with where the money should be going and that's Red Bull. Suddenly their Red Bull Music Academy seems to be everywhere: music workshops with some of the industry's top names; recording studios across the globe; some of the best line ups imaginable in their live events; and even free daily papers in London. There's a whole conversation that needs to be had regarding this and we'd love to hear your thoughts but for now we can't help but give a mention to their upcoming event with Brainfeeder next Wednesday. The line up is ridiculous.

Flying Lotus (Brainfeeder, Warp, Los Angeles)
Kode9 (Hyperdub, London)
The Gaslamp Killer (Brainfeeder, Low End Theory, Los Angeles)
Martyn (3024, Washington DC)
Dorian Concept (Kindred Spirits, Vienna)
Dimlite (Now-Again, Bern)
Daedelus (Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Los Angeles)
Nosaj Thing (Brainfeeder, Alpha Pup, Los Angeles)
TOKiMONSTA (Brainfeeder, Los Angeles)

Wednesday 10th March, 9pm–4am, Tickets: £12,50.
Fabric, 77a Charterhouse Street, London, EC1M 3HN

This should really be experienced live but just incase (like us who shall be making do with Nosaj Thing at Start The Bus in Bristol on Tuesday) you can't make it the great thing about these events is they're all recorded for RBMA Radio. There's absolutely loads of incredible music on there, right now we're listening back to their Culture Clash event with a Sound System show down between Soul II Soul, Trojan Soundsystem, DMZ (Digital Mystikz and Loefah) and Metalheadz (Goldie & Co) all hosted by Don Letts (who drops a killer special of Riot Music). Here's the links to each part of the night.

Part 1: The Warm-Up

Part 2: The Selection Round

Part 3: Entertainment Round

Part 4: Mixed-Up Styles Round

Part 5: Final Round - The Decider

We're still waiting for them to upload the set we caught from Andreya Triana in Bristol at the weekend. The new Ninja Tune signee performed a stunning version of the classic Eurythmics track Sweet Dreams and her live version of Tea Leaf Dancers (the track she recorded with Flying Lotus) was just beautiful. Her solo Sonar performance from 2007 is available to listen to here but it's without live band and not quite as confident as the Bristol show. Still worth a listen mind. Also, her new single drops April 5th, here's a little taster...

Freedom Is A Road Seldom Travelled By The Robots

It's been a while since Free The Robots dropped his debut EP onto the world and in that time his contemporaries on the West Coast scene such as Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing have firmly wedged themselves into our collective psyche. Now finally we have a full length episode of the FTR show and it's certainly been worth the wait.

The name of Chris Alfaro's project is most definitely apt. This is the kind of freedom that Johnny 5 tasted and all those other androids out there have been dreaming of since. The re-education of the robots takes on a history lesson of their portrayal in human culture with tracks like Sci-fidelity, a straight up 50s B Movie robo-invasion over a killer beat which we can’t help but picture Doom tearing up… ripe for the mash up we’d say. The rest takes in everything from 60s Eastern influenced psychadelia to modern crunk, all translated for the knowledge hungry robot's out there, whilst tracks like Voices takes the education further approaching the emotional side of things and teaching them about the relationships between pain and beauty.

Finally as the freestyle nature of The Eye (a collaboration with Mars Volta's Ikey Owens on keys) really highlights the computer as instrument and with the education complete you can almost feel the life force surging through their circuits. The Robots have most definitely been freed.

Ctrl Alt Delete drops via Alpha Pup Records on March 30th.

Flying Double

Should anybody decide to enforce a narrative on the post Hip-hop music era then one character in particular will loom larger than life and help to propel the story just a he has helped to push the music itself forwards. To celebrate a decade's worth of service to sound from Flying Lotus, his compadre Gaslamp Killer has crafted together an enchanting collection of new and exclusive with previous gems. Just in time to get you all sparkling with anticipation for the forthcoming Cosmogramma abum that is due to drop on Warp Records in April.

Download: A Decade of Flying Lotus (mixed by GLK) via Brainfeeder

Another group of West Coast sound warriors of similar airborne moniker the Flying Skulls have also hit us up with their latest live mix. Long serving readers will remember that much as we love their studio material it's in the freestyle arena that this band of crunk wielding grime and glitch Gladiators truly flex their muscles.

Flying Weezy

We've been pretty much locked in our own zome lately and paying far too little attention to the world around us, which means we missed these Flying Lotus remixes til just now, but it would be wrong not to blog just incase there's any of you guys in the same boat. Robo Tussin', FlyLo's overhaul of Lil Wayne's A Milli has been round since the summer but here it's also accompanied with the excellent instrumental for all those Weezy haters out there. The same is true of the other track, a remix of I Feel like Dying also from Mr Carter, although the vocal version itself is pretty subtle as it is.

Love Triangle

Flying Lotus lends his golden touch to this hauntingly sultry track from Future-soul songstress Muhsinah from the second half of her stunning album The Oscillations: The Triangle, which also features production from Mike Slott, Exile and Oddisee.

Dxnce On The Skylight

Time to drop it down a level for some straight up and sideways listening music. We suggest taking some time out and fully digesting what we're about to bring. You'll either love it or hate it we reckon but we're loving it right now.

We discovered this beautiful EP/Album from experimental producer and occasional rapper Jeremiah Jae through Flying Lotus' recommendation. Although the name Dxnce might be similar, this most definitely is by no means Dance music in the conventional sense, it's a collection of ghostly, glitched up rhythmical soundscapes taking in tribal drums, television and radio broadcasts, snatched moments of music from the world around us and a sparse selection of rhymes that weave themelves into the fabric rather than try and ride over them. For Jae this was an 'attempt to make songs about the rediscovering of the spirit, dreams, childhood, fears, love, and other fun stuff.' It may take us a few listens to really feel if his visions transfer over to us but this is probably going to sit in the player for some time yet.

Here's a couple of MP3s from the album as a taster...

Another artist who appears to approach his music like a soundscape drawing on many influences is Paul White. It hardly seems right to say these are more conventional releases than Dxnce but they are perhaps a touch more traditional in the realms of experimental Hip-hop, or maybe the funk is just a touch easier to find at least. Very much from the snippet school of beat making his latest two offerings Sounds From The Skylight (A & B) are both of a quality that compliments each other. Side A is very much playful and dream like whilst Side B is more urgent and upfront with some truly killer beats over spaced out synths and psychadelic samples. Listen and download them both for free over at Bandcamp.

And of course a few of our choicest cuts from the two...

Also if this is your flavour check out the seriously funksome jazzalicious Sounds From The Skylight mix that Paul recorded recently for Allez Allez.

Munch A Monday Mixtape For Super Powers

First up is a new mix from the fellas over at the Rub A Dub Dub site who were kind enough to host pur mix earlier in the week. Far from being a simple scratchy back situation though this is a full phat selection from a truly dope blog blended with love from Decibel, one of the residents over there and deserves to be pumped at the highest available volume. If you're car only has a shitty system, this is the one time when it is morally right to go steal another one. Second is an excellent mini mix that current Bass blog golden boy George Lenton recorded for Bobby Friction's show on the BBC Asian Network which also has a real short snippet from his new remix for our boy Pete Lawrie which is rather huge too. Catch Mr Lenton live on 28th October in Original Mash @ The Lab, Bristol or 18th November & 16th December in SOME @ The Den, London; lastly is a slice of low-fi riding bleep stomping future funk and Hip-hop from Alex B which he recorded for the Brainfeeder crew. Full of his own productions and snuggles in nicely next to the rest of the family over there.

It's Bigger Than...

We love getting new stuff from Kid 606's Tigerbeat6 label, because like the man himself, you never quite know what's in store but it's guaranteed to slap you in the face and make you listen. This time they've hit us up with the debut EP from French Glitch hop producer Humanleft and it's rather ginormous. It's like a big melting pot of our favourite things with elements of Acid Crunk, Ghettotech and Dubstep all in a phat bassed up, glitched out packed lunchbox of fun. You can pick up the EP from here.

Download: Humanleft - Roarr / alt link

We first heard of Cleveland Hip-hop crew Keyel after they hooked up with Flako on a blunted out excursion for their new mixtape. Now the mixtape has finally dropped in full force and it shows the fellas in fine form over a bunch of head bobbing future soul Post-Dillafied beats including this one produced by Sa-Ra.

Download: Keyel - Hanging by a String (prod. by Sa-ra Creative Partners) / alt link

Download: Keyel - Volume 1 (Mixtape)

Grayskull just hit us up with this glitched up re-rubbing of Amanda Blank' already fairly phat and filthy track. Think I prefer it to the original but then maybe I might like her's better if we slept together.

Download: Might Like You Better (Grayskull Remix ) / alt link

Maybe it's all in the name but there must be something in the water over in Boulder, Colorado cos I swear a few of our favourite Glitch hop tracks recently have been from that direction. This free EP from Denver Bass Squad member Samples is no exception. 5 and a bit beats that are crunchier and crisper than a bowl of dry cornflakes and ten times as tasty.

Download: Samples - Intercontinental Ballistic Lazer (EP)

Download: Samples - Blakka / alt link

In one of those interconnecting web jumping missions that can take days we also came across Freddy Todd out of Detroit, who has hooked up a remix for Samples in the past and has a number of his own filthy glitch ridden bass bangers currently riding round our playlist.

Download: Freddy Todd - Vespertino / alt link

Download: Freddy Todd - Ghost Dance Messiah (EP)

Our boy Ralph Rips Shit just put us on to the Mixtape that came out earlier in the year from Fresh Daily (who also has a new album that dropped last month). Some well borrowed beats from the likes of Flying Lotus, Gorillaz and Oddisee that perfectly frame his finely tuned seemingly effortless flow. Includes a heavy guest appearance from fellow New Yorker Mickey Factz (we're still looking for a 320 copy of him rhyming over Machine Gun by Portishead, hit us up if you got one).

Download: Fresh Daily - Tomorrow Is Today (Mixtape)

Download: Fresh Daily - Space Movies (Kanye West Dub) / alt link

Download: Fresh Daily - Winterfresh (Flying Lotus Dub) / alt link

On a jazzier mellow tip we just picked up this beautifully epic track from Leaving Records. It's a track from Oscar McClure who will be dropping his debut album on the LA based label in the near future. Perfect for a crisp Autumn morning.

Download: Oscar McClure - Augusting / alt link

Lots In Space

Dutch duo De Broer Van Mozes & The Lost Homeboy 2.0 have just out together a beautifully mutated off key digital Hip-hop mixtape for The New Worck featuring a wide selection of future thinking artists, of which the more noticeable include Flying Lotus, Ras G, Samiyam, Harmonic 313, Slugabed, Mike Slott and Dorian Concept. Check the full tracklisting here.

The 'Mother Fuckin' Man Himself

Have to give major props to (The Mother Fuckin') Gaslamp Killer for being one of the most animated DJs we've seen drop a Dubstep set yet. Not to mention the fact that it was also one of the heaviest selections, including an exclusive new track Dub from Joker that meant he destroyed a Bristol dancefloor, pretty much using their own weapons against them.

Here's a new track from his forthcoming EP My Troubled Mind, dropping August 4th on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. Something evil dug up from the haunted house of Hip-hop.

(YSI) Gaslamp Killer - Anything Worse / alt link

Support on the night came from Bristol based collective Vertebrae, a live Hip-hopesque crew who have been around for a while in some kind of form but who now seem to be made up of Awkward, Ben One and DJ Rogue, a strong line up of artists who have all earned their stripes and then some.

Although they're yet to have any finished recorded product in their current configuration, here's a few links to some of their recent solo output.

(SS) DJ Rogue – Self Harmony Mixtape Feat. MCs From Bristol

(DivShare) Awkward - Irons Podcast Vol One

Including new and exclusive material from the likes of Open Mike Eagle, Crunc Tesla, Lyrics Born and Awol One including tracks from Awkward's forthcoming Grand Prize LP

If you're feeling the Gaslamp Killer track we posted then you should most definitely appreciate these tasty treats from Ben One.

(YSI) Dobie - The New Madness(Ben One's Kold Sweat Remix) / alt link

(YSI) Ben One - The Good Life / alt link

Keep It Surreal

Paul White has kindly hit us up with this track from his superb new album The Strange Dreams of Paul White, it's a funked up fest of haunting ethereal vocal samples, twisted synths and driving Dillafied beats.

Check out and pick up a copy of the album (inc the handmade pillowcase CD version) over at his website you can also get copies of his first two singles for free.

(YSI) Paul White - Alien Nature (Extended Version) / alt link

You might have already caught the track on Paul's Mix for Mary Anne Hobbs back in January (which you can grab here) or on this fantastic mix from Take aka Sweatson Klank which was posted up on the Brainfeeder website recently. An expertly navigated journey through the worlds of dubbed out 2Step, off-key digitally mutated Hip-hop and rather surreal Jazz Psyche.
