Brooding Violence In The City

Rapper, producer and all round musical prodigy P.L.O. from the Associated Minds stable has just created this beautiful 'homage of the brooding shining violence' by reworking the Chromatics already rather broody track In The City into something that would fit perfectly into the Manhunter soundtrack (you know, the original Hannibal film from the 80s).

Smooth Operator

So you've got the object of your desire back to the manor and its blatantly gonna be on. You fix a couple of drinks, dim the lights but then you have a dilemma. What music do you put on? Sorry but gone are the days when you could just press play on the R Kelly cassette and let the wiley crackhead paedophile provide the soundtrack to your bumpin' and grindin', so what's the solution? Well there's no doubting that Hudson Mohawke is one of the slow-glitch kings and he has compiled a fine selection of 80s souls smoochers here in his second Valentines mixtape, however this can only be played in any romantic situations with extreme irony (hence the Gunshots throughout I guess). Just incase you didn't realise that we waited til a couple of days after Valentines to put this up, it's for your own good you realise. Now pass me another glass of Babycham and I'll try to figure out how to keep the strawberries in place with this damned cream running so much.

Pennies from Heaven Knows

I have to admit I’m a little dubious as to how long the Cool Kids can carry off their sound. It’s a fine line between throwing away the boundaries on time and using 80s Hip-hop as an influence - to making old sounding shit. Also, a lot of their stuff kinda sounds like Ice T’s ‘6 In The Morning’ or Schooly D ‘Parkside’ but these artists had a far wider repertoire of styles and tracks back then. Don’t get me wrong, although this track is more of the same, it still bumps and I’m not sick of them yet… infact when I finally play this out I’m sure all doubts will be beaten down by that B-line… and they whistle on the track too… cool. Still I have a friend's rant fresh in my mind from last night's gig (of which more soon). "Why are all these kids trying to relive the 80s, I was there... it was f**kin' shit."
