Monday Mixtape Making Madness

Monday not treating you so great? Why not get all Arts & Craft and build a tiny set of decks from matchsticks, sticky backed plastic and bottle lids then place your MP3 player underneath out the way but plugged up to your computer speakers (if you have battery powered ones all the better). Dig out your favourite action figure from the box in the attic to act as a DJ, head out into the garden and use these handy mixtapes as sets to play to all the insects... they'll love it.

Or you could just sit at the computer and listen to this fine selection from Bullion (crate digging, chin stroking and beautiful); 1000names (futuristic, head nodding and seriously left of Saturn); or OM Unit (phat, funkalicious and full of All City releases past present and future, including his very own Lightgrids just released on the label) , they'll sound just as good but it's not quite as fun.

Get Ready To (Crunk) Rock

First up is a titan clash between Mochipet and Kraddy as the Glitch Mobster takes on a track from the Glitch Godzilla's Master P on Atari album. He's not the only one either, Master P On Atari Transformed Vol. 1 which is out now on Daly City Records also features the likes of Restiform Bodies, S.P.E.C.T.R.E. and Sub Swara.

Mochipet fans should also check the new video for Robo Crunk Juice.

And this mosh stomping monster of a track with occasional uzi drum fire and the kind of violent guitar stabs that could seriously puncture your speakers, courtesy of from HavocNdeeD who's single Headspin is due to drop on Play Me Records in the next couple of weeks.

Firing Blanks (Not)

A while back we gave you a mini mix from a dope Glitch hop crew called Chip Chop (the combination of Portland-based producer Graintable and Lake Tahoe-based producer & drummer AD/AM). Well after some wait to get our hands on the individual tracks, the excellent Run Riot Records have picked up some for a proper release coming on the 2nd February, so we can all sleep soundly to a psychotic synth chainsawing our heads (although there are tracks such as Puking Rainbows which are deep on the floaty side of the fence) . Here's the title track from the EP.

Monday Mutha Flipping Mixtapes

Soooo. Right let's get straight to business as we show you the best way to spend your next 3 hours. Firstly is the latest mix from our Chrome Kids compadre Monkey. As you might expect from his productions, Monkey is the deep, soulful fella of the crew and this mix proves that to perfection. Laced with future funk, deep uptempo grooves and a touch of fried filth this is guaranteed to put your emotions on spin cycle; next we have a promo mix from SkisM from the Never Say Die crew who are dropping some seriously scorching remixes of the Foreign Beggars & Noisia track No Holds Barred by Excision and Affinity, and if that wasn't enough the release also includes remixes of Get A Bit More from Baobinga, Demus & Randomplay and SkisM; and also on the promo tip are the guys from Pipedown who are putting on a helluva line up of exciting artists this Wednesday at the Rhythm Factory including James Blake, Om Unit, Greena and Elijah & Skilliam. The mixing here is more than a bit patchy but the selection is still pretty killer.

2010 A Winter Oddisee

Folowing on from his Summer and Autumn albums, Oddisee returns to bring warmth to the Winter with a little help from some mic wielding friends, including UK rapper Tranquill and a New Yorker who has been catching our ear alot lately (props to the guys at Associated Minds for the heads up), Homeboy Sandman. The kind of sounds to melt even the most frostbitten of eardrums.

Who's Sorry Now?

Even though Brenda might be sorry, this beat is filth and fun with computers a far cry from begging forgiveness... we don't believe George Lenton is sorry at all.

Download: George Lenton - Im Sorry / alt link

but he has been having a good old think about maybe being sorry, probably... well this is certainly thinking music at least. A touch more mellow and magical than we've come to expect, you can almost hear somebody recounting their dreams by the side of a mountain lake some place... some place with guns and lazers and big fat booty b**tches...well okay it's not like that at all but we occasionally get that reaction when faced with anything nice and calming for too long.

Download: George Lenton - San Angel / alt link

We've said it before but we'll say it again... buy his Price EP when it drops in the near future.

Elephant Sized Beats From Bassnectar

In his first official mix for 2 years, Bassnectar comes at us from every direction firing proton pack funk into the speakers and not giving a f**k whether he crosses the streams and lets some big marshmallow bass into the arena. Actually marshmallow makes it sound alot fluffier than it is, this is pure filth with influences flying in from Dubstep, Hip-hop, Drum N Bass, Reggae and that Carnival full of Gypsies that rode into town when you were young. There's some original Bassnectar tracks, some re-edits and some friends along too. So steal a tank, strap a stack of speakers to the side and roll into town blasting for a full force 44 minutes and 25 seconds of heavyweight fun.

High On The Most Wanted Criminals List

High Rankin is a bad man. He is a purveyor of filth, sleaze and brutality, a self confessed Pimp and Gambler who pushes his pornographic beats on innocent ears and frivolously makes entertainment from the kind of x rated obscenities that you can only find on the top shelves of the most depraved record shops out there. It's no wonder this EP is coming out on a label called Cheap Thrills, ban it now!!

There is an example of how dangerous this man can be below, however if you would like to check the whole release so you can file a full report to the censors, you can find it at Beatport.

Fat Tracks With A Capital PH

We have to admit we find it hard not to like any of the of the bass heavy, mechanically monstrous beats and rhymes that fire out way from the Cape Town direction. A seriously big and dutty sound combined with seriously good rhymes, yet there's something light hearted about everything that keeps it from being too... well, serious. Not that this has any reflection on the quality, not by a long shot but there seems to be a consistent characteristic of really enjoying making music. None outline this more perhaps than the trio of Narch, Mark Z and Disco Izrael who make up P.H. Fat. We've included a couple of their tracks in the past, plus one or two solo pieces and now they've hit us up with some new tasty tunes to share with you all.

Eskom by P.H.fat

P.H.Fat - Dinosaur Blood by P.H.fat

Download: P.H. Fat - Dinosaur Blood

We also have some tracks from a crew who are new to us here but that fit perfectly into our already high estimations of the Cape Town scene. Jam Jar is the combination of producer Soundproof and Bakaman on rhyme duty, who sounds similar to Michael Franti at times with a deep laid back delivery, but then switches up and fires flames on Neck Low, one of the more Dubstep influenced tracks. Here's a couple of examples but there's plenty more on Baka's Soundcloud account.

Jam Jar - Neck Low by baka

Jam Jar - Fire In The Jets by baka

Download: Jam Jar - Fire In The Jets

Plus finally we have an instrumental from a man who's no stranger to this page and who has worked with members of P.H. Fat and Baka in his time. If any emcees are feeling this beat enough to ride it then Liver would be most pleased.

From Daly City To The Land Of Animation

Daly City explores something of a deeper sensitive side to their soul with their new signing, London producer MusSck. Still keeping it glitchy and in the realm of Hip-hop's cyborg reconstruction, this album is more subtle then previous label releases, conjuring up open rolling virtual plains to wander through. Playful yet emotional, there appears to be a fairly comprehensible story being told from track to track and chapter to chapter, let's hope there's many more volumes to come.

You can buy The Land Of Animation now here, but to give you a taster here's one of the tracks plus a promo mix to check out.

Keeping It Steady

New single here from the Madlib produced album In Search Of Stoney Jackson from LA 'super-group' Strong Arm Steady (now minus Xzibit) due out on Stones Thrown in the near future. The track features the ever soulful Phonte from Little Brother who compliments the depth of the track perfectly. There's also a non-album track Follow Me, a gritty little blunted ride through their mind state. Both have been cleaned up to broadcast friendly status for all you radio peeps.

- CanDo

A Scribble Jam winner and Low End Theory host, NoCanDo is no stranger to those with any kind of connection to the current West Coast scene, so it's perhaps a little surprising then that his debut full length is only just upon us. Dropping courtesy of Daddy Kev's Alpha Pup label and with a producer line up that includes the likes of Nosaj Thing, Daedelus, Free the Robots and Thavius Beck, we were obviously excited about this album before it even hit the player. It doesn't dissapoint either, one of the most well rounded Hip-hop albums for a long time Nocando switches up styles, flows and deliveries in a way that truly showcases his long term love of the music without having his nostalgia chip jammed in any particular heyday. From crunked up club bangers to more instrospective head nodders, this is serious business which never takes itself too seriously.

The West Coast Hip-hop scene has always been a diverse and divided bag of noise. From classic Gangsta Rap to the Good Life Cafe attendees back in the late 80s and 90s, or Bay Area Hyphy and the kind of artists who grace the upper echelons of Low End Theory. Although this album is perhaps a little too grown up to truly cross over and a little too contemporary for the traditionalists, it joins the dots for the current scenes well and in many ways brings everything else up to date. Grab it!

Jimmy The Lock is out on Alpha Pup from January 26th but we have a copy of the new single for you here.

Monday(ish) Mixtapes

Not sure if we quite made it in time to still be included as Monday, but f**k it, some place in the world is having a Monday right now so here you go. We got something a little different for you hear but if ever there was a reason to rip up the rule book, it's Pete Lawrie. This muti-talented, multi-instrumentalist, singer / songwriter will be no stranger to regular readers and here he gives a slight nod back to his days as a Hip-hop DJ / Producer, although this is perhaps a world away (despite a touch of Roots Manuva up in there). If this is a little too soulfully soothing for you we've put up a filthy mix of big and bashie Filth-step to keep you amused, from relative newcomers Plastic Thumbs.

David Sitarfire

We first came across David Starfire through his remixes for NY bass fusion crew Sub Swara, indeed it seems that David also shares their superb taste in Indian flavours and has cooked up a long play follow up to his Bombay Beatz EP. Bollyhood Bass is out now on Six Degrees and here's the first track from the album Sitarfire along with a bootleg remix of a certain Scouse quartet's Come Together (the album also features a cover version of their track Hey Jude, the first song the multi instrumentalist ever learnt on the guitar).

DJ Cable Vs. Mark Pritchard & Dem Franchize Boyz "Wind It Up & Lean Wit It"

It's about time I unleashed yet another blend/mashup for your listening pleasure...And what better than some good ol' THUGSTEP?

If you remember "Fuck Thugstep Vol. 1", then you'll know this was made as an exlcusive blend for Ego Thieves & Rock The Dub. However, due to the amount of people asking for it, I thought I'd be kind and post it up here as a free download.

Spoek Your Mind

We mentioned in our 2009 round up, the extra prolific nature of Spoek Mathambo, and just to highlight our point here's just a few of the projects that have caught our attention recently which have addded Spoek sparkle to their merits.

First up those bass hungry Bavarians Schlachthofbronx have a new EP out on Man Recordings, they hit us up with the title track Ayoba (a South African slang expression used for general appreciation) which features Spoek along with Gnucci Banana on a tropical hype tip.

Schlachthofbronx "Ayoba" feat. Spoek + Gnucci Banana by MANRECORDINGS

plus here's a video they recorded for the track

Next up, is a new EP from LA based rapper Subtitle, which as well as boasting a beat selection from the likes of Bearmod and Megasoid has this Mochipet produced bass bubbler featuring a killer vocal line up of Cadence Weapon, fellow Briefcase Rocker , Juan Huevos and of course Mr Mathambo himself.

Download: Subtitle feat Cadence Weapon, Juan Huevos & Spoek - 4 On The Floor / alt link

Finally is an EP we discovered at South African music blog Electro Trash from Sweat X (Spoek and Markus Wormstorm). Unfortunately the file is bringing up error messages but it might work for you guys, If anyone has any other links to this EP hit us up.

Big In Japan?

On a similar tip to the AK Kids EP we posted recently, Akira Kiteshi once more eschews the big brutal bass sound for a more atmospheric soundscape created from looped up reel to reels, outboard synths and old jazz vinyl, and again recorded in one take.

Get Ya Knobs Out For Roisin

Myuzyk To Our Ears

Our bredren Benjamin One just schooled us to a new compilation due out on the free net label Myuzyk on Monday 8th February. Comprising of a bunch of artists we don't know (except for Ben himself of course and a most welcome return from Dark Circle a German crew who found favour on UK Hip-hop labels such as Jazz Fudge and Defcon back at the start of the last decade) but have had great pleasure in getting to know. Infact it's a struggle not to post the whole album as every single track, from the sketchy flute splatttered future Dub of Klondike Kids to the intense Ghost train glitch of E.A.R.L. is a straight up sonic feast, loosely drawing lineage from the depths of the experimental Hip-hop psyche. Regular readers should by now understand that free music does not mean a compromise in quality and with this compilation, Myuzyk damn well cements that sentiment to the head of every listener. Here's a few of our choice cuts.

The Don's Leisurely Mix For January

Don Leisure returns with a new mix of the month, featuring bags of funk and soul added to the clunk click glitch fuzz of the LA, Detroit and Glasgow post Hip-hop schools of music. Includes a new tune from the man himself which is perhaps fittingly dedicated to the LA Lakers forward and Clippers General Manager Elgin Baylor (see / hear below).

Protect Or Serve

Back in the day a DJ would protect the identity of their tunes by covering the labels. This was to stop other DJs from playing the same tunes and ultimately building a better collection / reputation than each other. This was when it was strictly vinyl and you had to dig deep in the crates to find the right break. Now DJs are using Serato, other DJs can just look over their shoulder at the screen and there's so much good music out there being created at an astonishing rate that no DJ should ever need to worry about one or two tunes being played by one of the million or so other DJs out there. So with this in mind, why has nobody invented a screen for us poor individuals in the crowd who can't look over shoulders? The DJ can put it in front of them and as the next tune comes in it will scroll along the screeen. If the DJ wants to show off a bit with his selection he can simply have a bunch of exclusives that nobody else could get anyway. This is how I felt last night when I hit the excellent Dubloaded night at The Croft in Bristol, during the two and a half sets I managed to catch from Ghettozoid, Hyetal and Apple Blim, I was suddenly made to feel most inadequate in my musical knowledge and caught the craving for many of the selections laid down. It was all I could do to stop myself from waiting outside in a balaclava and robbing their laptops on the way out just to get those tunes, so DJs, to stop crime and save yourselves the hassle and money of replacing your computers and music collections, invent something!

One tune I did recognise and thankfully Baobinga was on hand to confirm, was this remix of his track Ride It by one of our currrent 'can do no wrongs' Untold, due out on Baobinga's very own Build Recordings label shortly.

BUILD002 - Baobinga - Ride It w/ Untold RMX by Build Recordings

Plus here's a mix from Revolva (previously Octopussy) that he posted up on Bass Music Blog yesterday, made all the more poignant by the fact that one half of this duo is Ghettozoid (the other being BUF) who was in the house spinning some stunning selections yesterday. One of which, a beautiful track using an Anne Peebles sample from I Can't Stand The Rain is set to be released on her new One4Ho label in the near future (sorry but can't remember the name of the Berlin producer whose tune it actualy was).

Cardiff Runnings

Seems that things have been kinda quiet in the Welsh capital recently but there's always a lava pool of talent bubbling under the surface ready to erupt in a volcanic explosion of sound. If it eveer does happen these folks should definitely be part of Cardiff smoke cloud set to bury the unexpected.

We've got a big bag of dubz courtesy of Curtamos whose sound is ever developing and now bridges the Dubstep borders between deep and dirty perfectly. Look out for Drop and Stormtroop in particular, both have been snapped up for release. He also hit us up with this Reel 2 Real bootleg which returns a certain amount of credibility to the dope but rather cheese stained club classic.

We first heard of the L.D.P. (previously L.D.G. - Lock Down Generals from what we can understand) from Stagga's Face Get Splat track which featured JBone and Y Dot from the crew (which also includes Ability). Yesterday we posted a preview to the Cardiff Grime crew's new DVD but then after hunting them down we got hold of this track as well, only 128kbps but well worth a listen.

Speaking of Stagga, we previewed his remix of Hour Glass by Squid Ninjaz soldier Joe Blow a while back. Well Joe just hit us up with the original to the track which is going to be the first single from his new album Dead Man Smoking.

Android Godzilla Porn (It's All In The Name)

As if Kraddy from the Glitch Mob's solo stomper Android Porn was not monstrous enough, it's just had a Godzilla sized remix from Mochipet. Due to drop on Berlin based Equinox Records.

Move Out The Bludclart Monday Mixtapes

Right as we come out fighting to face the week with dubz in hand and a slew of chaos in the weekend wake, here's some extra armoury for the eardrums. First two are part ones in what we hope will continue into long and illustrious mixtape dynasties. We have the Lowriders Collective season with the pilot episode courtesy of Coco Bryce and future mixes from the likes of Slugabed, Débruit and Hovatron to look forwards to; Second is a touch more partytastic from Shorterz and kicks of the Bigger Than Barry Records Mixtapes whilst the third and well the fourth too are 2 major mash up journeys from the The Kleptones (who had the Beastie Boys / Prodigy combo on our last mix), one full rock out and another more introspective and chilled.
