Elucid Dream-On

Elucid has been hard at work putting the finishing touches to his Super Chocolate Black Simian release which is out 11th January. Here's the first taste and think these are probably our favourite yet, even more menacing, intense, passionate and poetical than usual riding huge productions from Chasing Shadows and DVA. Not sure what type of war we'd ever want to get into, but whatever it is we've found our marching music.

Bumper Boxing Day Bag Of Big Tunes

For all those of you snowed in at the moment or simply can't move cos you stuffed yourselves too much over Christmas, here's a bumper blog post of new music that should see your speakers through to the new year in fine style.

First up, if you haven't picked up a copy of the Stagga single 'Genik Riddim' yet, get involved! The track featuring Skamma & Joe Blow from Squid Ninjaz is beastly and the release carries killer remixes from Starkey, Distal and HavocNdeed. Not for the faint hearted though, this is definitely on the grimier side. Here's a copy of the Starkey Remix (Radio Version just in case you want to play it to your mum or jam it on the airwaves).

Download: Stagga feat Skamma + Joe Blow - Genik Riddim (Starkey Remix - Radio Edit) / alt link

Next up is a fresh bootie from our boy Parker. as expected he's smashed it again with a beefed up Glitch hop take on a funk / soul club classic. Shall definitely be jamming this on New Years Eve this year. You can pick up a whole album of remixed classics (including this one) by registering over at Ghetto Funk.

Aretha Franklin - Rock Steady (Parker Remix) by DJ Parker

Central Spillz shall be dropping their long awaited album 'Space Travel' next month. Everything we've heard from it so far is great and to celebrate they're giving away the original version of their rowdy calling card track 'What Ya Know About'.

Download Central Spillz - What Ya Know About / alt link

Been jamming the remix and 'tribute' version of Cassie's 'Skydiver' album hard recently and didn't even realise it's been given away as a free download. Some incredible Future Garage, Post-step, Glitch hop type remixes from the likes of Brackles, Altered Native and The Blessings. Pick up the whole album here or grab a little taster from Lunice and 8Bitch below.

Download: Cassie - Addiction (Lunice Remix) / alt link

Download: Cassie - Me & U (8Bitch Cover) / alt link

We've posted a couple of Kill Light tracks up here before but pretty sure we haven't put this one up yet. It's from their new EP on Black Butter Records and is a great fusion of deep tribal Future Garage vibes and more jump up Funky-esque flavours. Also if you haven't got the Rack N Ruin download from Black Butter yet, grab it here and check out their 'Skanker Riddim' below.

Download: Kill Light - Spitting Feathers / alt link

Skanker Riddim Free Download! by RackNRuin

Foreign Beggars have been killing it this year and their Dented Records label continues to drop top quslity Hip-hop from their extended family also. The latest release is the Brainstorm Mixtape from LDZ (London Zoo) and is probably the best from the crew yet. To be honest we generally check for the guest spots which as always here includes dope spitters such as Dubbledge and Stig but this stands up the whole way through despite being rather too lengthy at 24 tracks.

Download: LDZ - Curryhouse / alt link

Bossasaurus have been on our radar for a while but they have just dropped their first official album and by jove I think they've got it. Thoughtful journeys off the beaten track, epic journeys in space and funk excursions into the future. An all round winner for any fans of Glitch hop, Future Boogie or Instrumental Beats in general and all for free from their Bandcamp page.

Download: Bossasaurus - Light Pollution / alt link

Download: Bossasaurus feat. Robin Gazzara - Dark Days, White Lies / alt link

Some straight up Psycho-step on this Thrills remix from the first release off their new Be Bonkerz label.

xXxXx - Ekko Tech - (Thrills Dubstep Remix) by Be Bonkerz

Back on the laid back and broody vibe, it's been a while since we heard from Inaudible but he's back with this dope double headed Glitch hop / Dubstep release on Bandcamp, which is rather openly entitled 'Feed Me Your Email'. Seems a small price to pay but if you're really not down with joining any kind of mailing list at all then hit him up on Soundcloud and he'll pass you a link anyway.

Download: Inaudible - Carnival

We also got the latest Thugstep mash up from DJ Nappy courtesy of those good fellas over at Rock The Dub.

Download: Hurricane Chris vs. Magnetic Man - A Bay Bay (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)

Ghetts has been feeling kinda festive and dropped a new free EP for Grime Daily. You can pick up the whole thing there but here's our choice cut.

Download: Ghetts feat Wiley & Dot Rotten - Spun / alt link

And finally Philly rapper Gilbere Forte drops a little something over N.E.R.D.'s 'God Bless Us All'

As a seasonal bonus, here are some Dubstep/UKG freebies that have put up by various producers... Skream has been a roll with his Freeizm EPs this year, and top off what's been an amazing year for both him and Magnetic Man, he's released a Freeizm LP, containing a selection of sought-after dubs.

Download it HERE

Last but not least, legendary UK Garage and House producer Zed Bias has recently liberated a load of lost tracks after stumbling across the DAT tapes.

Zed Bias - 'LOST DATS ARCHIVE' volume 1 (Xmas Giveaway) by zedbias

In his words:

To celebrate a great year I've decided to share a selection of 20 Zed Bias and Phuturistix remixes, rare bootlegs and instrumentals from between 1998 and 2000. About 6 years ago I had lost a box of DAT tapes and randomly found them again this year... these DATs contain all my early recordings and here I've selected some cuts that are unavailable digitally anywhere and I've had them remastered so they are ready for bangin, in the car, in the club or on your ipod.... Enjoy!

Caspa "Marmite (Cable VIP Re-edit)"

Seeing as the snow has fucked up another one of my bookings this weekend, I thought I'd get back on the blogging...

Some of you may remember I made this back in 2009 as a DJ tool. After featuring it in my Discobelle and BBC 1Xtra mixes, and months of requests - here it is. Caspa's banger gets flipped into a breaks/booty bass number.

Unicorn Love & Mole Hatred

With the popularity of last week's Chrome Kids release, the "I Love Unicorns" maxi-single, its creator, Th' Mole, has also taken some flack. The Sickrime Komitty have just released a single called "Fuck Th' Mole!" in which they attack the unique MC's musical ability, self-promotional techniques, and his masculinity!

One of the most cutting verses comes from Ms. Persepshin, in which she states, "...your fuckin' dad's your only fan. It really is no wonder that he raised a sap like you. But lucky for the future of the human gene pool, no woman in her right mind would ever mate with you. I would fuck a million lepers to avoid a date with you." Then, adding insult to injury, Th' Mole's dad makes an appearance in which he claims, "I'm not really a fan of him either. Fuck him."

But every dark cloud has a silver lining. For a good laugh check out the horribly designed Sickrime Komitty web page.

Dubstep Christmas Part II

No dance genre can truly have said to come of age until it's contributed a remix of 'Walking In The Air'. Bless our bredren Linton Brown for this one, he had that summer sound locked down this year but now it truly is a Dubstep Christmas. You can pick up plenty free tracks (but not this one sadly) from his Soundcloud account.

Ooh Me Too!

George Lenton hit us with a couple of more chilled excursions than the thumpers we’re used to. First is an off beat and reflective reworking of ‘Mr Me Too’ from Clipse & Pharrell

West Coast Still Rockin'

We seem to have been stockpiling recently so here's a triplet of treats from our US West Coast cousins.

First up, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Bassnectar is one of our favourite artists and a big inspiration to us kids by the blatant lack of posting recently. We’ve not only been sitting on this absolute beast of a bootleg he put together with Datsik, which uses a tune from two of my favourite artists growing up, Rebel MC & Top Cat; but we’ve sat on this savage mix he recorded for Annie Nightingale while he was here as well; and the first time he came to tear up a club in our home town, I was at a club in London that he’d played at a few days before! None of this is through anything other than a hectic schedule and the kind of planning that would make a Griswold holiday look like the Roman Invasion of Britain, we still got mad love for Lorin and family over here and these goodies show exactly why that is… Enjoy.

Download: Bassnectar + Datsik – YES / alt link

Tracklisting:

Intro
Bassnectar – Here We Go
DC Breaks – Halo (Bassnectar remix)
Bassnectar – Massive Attack Remix
Bassnectar – The 808 Track
Bassnectar – Bass Head
Sub Focus – Splash (Bassnectar remix)
Jimi Hendrix – various
Deftones – Prince (Bassnectar remix)
Reich – Proverb (Takemura vs Bassnectar remix)

Another artist from the West Coast who’s been influential since day one and inspired us to coin the term Hulk Hop some time back is Mochipet. He joins both Jack Beats and Sub Swara in putting together a club destroying remix of Big Boi’s ‘Shutterbug’, this is the kind of filthily hot electronic business you’d get from the same Jawas who tried selling R2D2 as a sex slave (or did I make that version of Star wars up?).

Download:
Big Boi - Shutterbugg (Mochipet Remix)

Absolutely love the Glitch hop style approach to this Dubstep tune from MartyParty which carries the depth of his PANTyRAID cohort’s (Ooah) Of Porcelain project (which we still feel was criminally underated) with the bump of his Glitch Mob stuff. It’s off his first EP which is out on December 14th.

Download: MartyParty – Los Angeles

We Love Unicorns!

From Chrome Kids and the oddball MC who taught us 'How To Be Cool' last year, Th' Mole's 'I Love Unicorns' is an unlikely rap song withheart, guaranteed to make anyone crack at least a small smile.

Setting himself apart from the slew of 'hipster hop' Th' Mole is a truly unique individual, as he proves irrevocably with the b-side track 'Shocky Guy Go' which features Asian strings, symphonic arrangements and lyrics rapped in an imaginary language.

In addition to remixes of the title track by Robot Koch (Kitty Yo/K7), The Flying Skulls (1320/Daly City), and up-and-coming producer Frietboer, there is also a printable Th' Mole paper doll included in the download!

Pick up a copy from Bandcamp now.

Th' Mole: I Love Unicorns maxi-single - 01. I Love Unicorns (Robot Koch Remix) by magicalbass

Even Radio 1 music supremo and Bestival overlord had to agree that "This is immense". We believe the Robot Koch mix is due to be his tune of the day today, however he is knee deep in Bestival line up announcements (The Cure, Primal Scream, Brian Wilson, Magnetic Man, Crystal Castles, DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, Norman Jay, LFO, Omar Souleyman, A Trak, Katy B, 65 Days Of Static and Pantha Du Prince so far... blimey!) so may have slipped by for today.

Plus here's a new mix from DJ Comfort of the crew. Catch all the fellas alongside Magenta, Curtamos and a battle between Beatbox Major and Beatbox Fozzy on Thursday December 9th at Cardiff Arts Institute.

South Wales Grime & Gritty

Loads of great stuff to get up here over the weekend but first I'm going to have to represent our hometown again plus our next door neighbours in Newport. Some of the Grime boys from both combined to do a South Wales version of Pow 2011 (check the 'English' version here).

Few people missing to make this definitive of the scene here but a heavy selection of representatives still. One of those missing is Desimus who has a new Hip-hop tune with D Gritty, representing their adoptive hometown hard.

We Got The Funk

Seems like the birth of a new mutated hybrid genre every week at the moment, soon it's gonna be a different scene sprouting for each tune. We've thrown a few into the pot ourselves so we're not about to complain, infact we shall celebrate a new genre called N-Funk! What is it? Well from what we can tell it's a mix of, erm... Funky Breaks and Electro Breaks, and the scene so far consists of NAPT but nevertheless it's set to have a big hit in the shape of 'Make My Day' featuring Bashy (see above vid).

To celebrate this union they've broke out a couple of classics to mash up with Bashy's 'Millionaire'. With Breaks having taken a bit of a bashing the past few years we're happy to sneak this to you in the form of a new genre, cos it's phunky as hell.

As we gear up for the official Chrome Kids release of Th' Mole's "Go Horsie" maxi-single on December 1 (featuring Robot Koch, The Flying Skulls, etc.), the busy little critter has managed to squeeze out two other releases just this month, both of them audio-visual packages.

Superman Vs. Gremlins is an album's worth of new songs, remixes and three videos, including guests Graz, Demune, Vankmen, Oskar Ohslon, Warrior Queen, Playpad Circus and more.

Dope Run

Only recognised Mike Ladd on this compilation but was enough to check it out. Great mix of indie Hip-hop, glitchy psych beats and fuzzy anti folk. Marathon Of Dope don't quite nail this vibe as well as Ghostly International but there's some true gems in here still.

Hot & Cold

Forget Delia Smith or Nigella Lawson, we bring you two cookery programmes with a difference. First Oreo Jones cooks up a mean chilli whilst Pro-Ef puts your post Halloween pumpkins to good use with his Ice Cream recipe.

Let's Do Lunch: Chilli Cook Off

Epic Pumpkin Ice Cream

Pro-Ef | Simple Recipes - Epic Pumpkin Ice Cream by iampro~Ef

4 cups (1 L) vanilla ice cream
1 cup (250 mL) pure pumpkin purée
5 tbsp (75 mL) sugar
1/2 tsp (2 mL) ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp (2 mL) ground ginger
pinch ground cloves

Scoop vanilla ice cream into a bowl and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes to soften. Add remaining ingredients to bowl and beat with electric beaters just until combined. Freeze until firm, then scoop and enjoy. Serves about 5.

Still Number 1

By now you should have already checked out our latest radio show so it's time to tune in to another one. A few weeks ago all the four nations shows on BBC Radio 1 combined at Clwb Ifor Bach for a special show which featured live performances from Kobi Onyame (Scotland), Hot City (England), Not Squares (N Ireland) and Vanguard (Wales). I had a few words with Bethan Elfyn there about Chrome Kids and the Welsh Electronic music scene generally. The show also includes new tunes from Exotope, Monky and a track by CRST made especially for the show from samples collected by the four nation presenters on a record shopping mission round Cardiff. There's also a brief history of Welsh contribution to Dance music from GLC, name checking acts such as Llwybr Llaethog, K Klass, Jean Jacques Smoothie and High Contrast.

You can listen on the BBC iPlayer for another 5 Days (click on that link)

We're also sad to hear that Bethan is leaving her slot on BBC Radio 1, she's been an amazing beacon for quality Welsh music for over a decade and has been a great supporter of the Hip-hop, Dubstep, Drum & Bass and Electronic scenes generally, making sure they get a fair placing amongst the more established rock and indie formats. She even let us take over her show for a night!

Thankfully all is not lost and we place full faith in Jen Long who shall be stepping into the position. We're sure we haven't heard the last from Bethan though and we wish both of them all the best in their future phases.

Chrome Kids Radio Show - 3rd November 2010

Okay so this week we started with a track off the new Terror Danjah album, if anyone was questioning the future of Grime we suggest it’s right here or perhaps it’s the next track that holds the key as Grime singer Maverick Sabre rips it over Starkey’s 'Holodeck' to massive effect with 'Run To The Roof'. Then out of Iceland is Hypno, with a Juke influenced slab of bass music for RAMP. Glasgow’s S-Type drops on his hometown label Phuturelabs with a Crunkstep track dedicated to wildlife badman 'Terry Nutkins'. Stateless have a fantastic album due next year on Ninja Tunes from which we take 'Miles To Go', if you want a Dark Sky remix of their single 'Ariel', you can grab it here. Our boys CRST provide a juicier than thou remix of the new single from Bloc Party frontman Kele whilst also from the South Wales area is Exotope who changes up his usual filth monsters for a stunning slice of House / Garage and even Monky steps ever closer to the House arena with his brilliantly named 'Potato Dolphins'. Skinnz drops a firing remix of 'Holy Mountain', the debut release from Talk, a recent signing for the Nightshifter’s label. Every mix on Shy FX’s forthcoming single 'Raver' is a killer, we opted for the MJ Cole one. The first Sub Swara album blew us all away and their forthcoming follow up 'Triggers' certainly doesn’t disappoint either. A weighty guest list includes members of Antibalas, Dead Prez and the track we played which features Lyrics Born (who also has a pretty dope funked up album As U Were that’s just dropped). Also on more of a Hip-hop tip is: DELS new single for Big Dada which once again is produced by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard; and Pigeon John’s ode to chore slacking 'To Do List'. Top this off with a J.O.H. remix of Ikonika’s 'Ikoniklast' and you have the show.

That was more a stream of consciousness than a round up but anyway, now shut your eyes, press play and get it in listening form.

Download: Chrome Kids Radio Show (November 3rd 2010)

Tracklisting:

Terror Danjah & Dream Mclean - Grand Opening
Maverick Sabre – Run To The Roof
Hypno – Go Shorty
S Type - Terry Nutkins

Kele - On The Lam (C.R.S.T. Remix)
Shy FX - Raver (MJ Cole Remix)
Talk - Holy Mountain (Skinnz Remix)
Exotope – Everything In My Mind
Nosaj Thing - Light #1 (Take Remix)
