Party Like It's....

You can catch the various members of Chrome Kids across the city of Cardiff on New Years Eve this year but we shall be getting together for a Midnight set at Undertone (aka The Basement) for Stus Party who have brought back their favourite Fin, Rico Tubbs who has absolutely smashed it every time he's touched down at their parties. Also on the bill are the killer combo Chesus & Rodski who have been getting major play since we first told you about them a few months back. We've got a fair few things to share with you but they'll keep until the New Year, see you then and wherever you are make it BIG.

We've Got Plenty of Trouble

Despite some strong artists and scenes all over the world, LA is still our favourite home for Electronic Bass artists approaching things from a Hip-hop mind set. One of the key players in our reasoning like this is Troublemaker, a man who surely knows where a computer's funk button sits.

We first came across him through his work with Tatelarock, and we've put up a few of his remixes over the past few months. However he's just uploaded a shed load of his killer remixes which gives a perfect chance to either remind you or introduce you to why we're feeling him so much. You can grab them all over at his MySpace page but here's a selection of our favourites.

This True Skool classic gets a phat and filthy redub which we have been rinsing hard in the clubs, even when it's not quite appropriate...

(YSI) Camp Lo - Luchini (Tatelarock & Troublemaker Remix)

This massive Brazillian tune gets even bigger with a trip to LA...

(YSI) Bonde Do Role - Gasolina (SK87 Remix Troublemaker Edit)

One of our favourite soul tracks of last year from one of the most under-rated live acts out there flips into a gnarly electro-rock skanker...

(YSI) Yes King - 40 Long Days (Troublemaker Remix)

The fellas enter close to the realms of Dubstep with this dirty Digi-Dub rub...

(YSI) Tatelarock & Troublemaker - The End Is Near

Here's a couple of his Mixtapes which give a good insight into what influences make their way into his remixes. If your DJ doesn't turn up to the party then whack these on and you'll be guaranteed a roof raiser.

These Menabadmen

Toddla T just sent out this killer Bassline refix of his track Manbadman by Radio 1's Andy George

Plus speaking of Andy George his Jump & Twist track with Scott Cooper has also had a bit of a re-rub from Canadian Bmore / electro warriors Jokers Of The Scene.

FlyLo on Lockdown

Last time I put up a remix of this track (by Chew Fu and Tonedeff) it got taken down within a couple of days so I’m not even gonna tell you who it’s by as it should be obvious. All I will say is this version comes from Flying Lotus and just as he did with A Milli, he doesn’t just remix it, he owns it.

(YSI) Flying Lotus – L**e Lockdown

And actually, cos these were taken down rather unfairly earlier in the year, here they are again.

Chrome Kids Catch Up

We've been a bit hectic here at Chrome Kids HQ this week so thought we should give you just a quick catch up of the things that we've been feeling recently that we've been meaning to put up. Some of them you may well have found elsewhere by now but if not... download that isht!

First up we've got the...

Here's two of the best Essential Mixes from BBC Radio 1 we've hear for some time. The first was original broadcast last month but if you haven't caught it you really need to. It's Flying Lotus creating the beautifully crisp yet dirty lunar soundscapes he does so well, for 2 hours.

(Megaupload) Flying Lotus Essential Mix - BBC Radio 1 / 29th November 2008

Next up is filthy and disgusting 'Jump Up' Dubstep from Rusko, who we're finding it hard to tell apart from Caspa these days, maybe they've finally morphed into the same person. Watch out for the remix of The Prodigy track Breathe, his very own Kate Perry dub that turns an innocent kiss into a full on lesbian porno and a little re-touch of Eastern Jam that makes it even more evil.

(Megaupload) Rusko Essential Mix - BBC Radio 1 / 13th December 2008

Squincy Jones and Dayta from the Texas club night Speakerboxx Thursdays kept us going through a particularly heavy work load during the early hours of the morning with this live mix on the MK Ultra Show, KTRU covers a lot of the styles that we do on Chrome Kids with a few random fun bits worked in for good measure. Keep upto date with their goings on via

(ZShare) Squincy Jones & Dayta - MK Ultra Show - KTRU / 12th December 2008

Samo Sound Boy, one half of Seattle based duo Risky Business put this style hoppin’, time travelling mix up on Turntable Lab earlier this year and is now giving it out for free to anyone silly enough not to pick it up the first time. A truly fun mix that glides between Blaqstarr, New Order, M.I.A., Elephant Man, Felix Da Housecat and The Jets with ease.

(ZShare) Samo Sound Boy - Sound Boy Tell 'Em (zip)

Lastly is the latest in the excellent We Make It Good Mix Series from ultra stylish media company Shilo. This one is courtesy of Baltimore bass blasting bad man Blaqstarr. Another eclectic one as he drops in his “inspirational tunes, the music I adapt too and the artists that influence me, and a few joints I made from the durdy to air so I could make sure ya’ll heard me… “ including Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Nirvana, Outkast, Madonna and tracks he’s recorded with Rye Rye and MIA. I forgot one other B word... bonkers!

(Direct Link) Shilo presents We Make It Good Mix Series, Vol.06: Blaqstarr

Next up there's a few...

This huge collabo between Canadian electro rockers MSTRKRFT and New York 'super thug' N.O.R.E. dropped back in April but now they've put together a video which manages to squeeze a shaky storyline around N.O.R.E.'s favourite topics of sex, drugs, money, gangsterism and erm... partying.

MSTRKRFT - Bounce feat. N.O.R.E & Isis

bigUP to Trailer Trasher for putting us onto this incredible new project from Mykah 9 and J The Sarge- Magic Heart Genies. This track is coming like Californian grime, and we just picked up the album which is a Hip-hop gemstone.

Magic Heart Genies - Heartifact

Now seems I might be on my own here as I'm lovin' this tune at the moment but it seems that everyone else who I've played it to so far seems to think it's wrong. Which yes it is a bit, the video features a bunch of roughneck looking young German's and the tune doesn't seem to get much deeper than fighting and drinking but hell, only a couple of days ago I was complaining about a lack of aggression in someone's music, and here it is on a platter. It's also damned catchy if you get past what seems to be an English speakers aversion to the German language... and no, to squash the worry that a couple of people had about the guys in this video, they are not a Neo Nazi group. The irony being that the assumption in itself is a bit racist. Let me know what you think of this though, I'm honestly interested and bigUP to Schakkerhart for putting us onto him.

JayJay - Knüppel Klopp

And some...

First up, here's another great new Electro-Funk tune from Old Money's Scareapeutic project which drops Monday.

(ZShare) Old Money - Gangster With An 'A'

New Jersey Dubstep DJ / Producer The Widdler has reworked Kid Cudi's Kanye-esque Day N Nite just enough to sit perfectly in his sets.

(ZShare) Kid Cudi - Day N Nite (Widdler Remix)

Suso have just put up a fantastic 'cross media project' with members of LuckyMe which features some exclusive new remixes from Dema, Mike Slott, The Blessings and Jay Prada. Here's a couple of our choice cuts but you should head over to their site and check out the rest of the project.

(YSI) Mike Slott Vs American Men - Ammn Sys M1(Suso Golden remix)

(YSI) Dema Vs Isoceles - This is Where it Ends(Suso Gloss Remix )

(YSI) Jay Prada Vs Great Escape - It's On (Suso Laser Remix )

And RCRD LBL just put up a Count of Monte Cristal (aka Herve) remix of NASA's track Money, the original of which we put up a couple of days back. Straight jackin' electro bizness.

NASA - Money (The Count Of Monte Cristal Dungeon Remix) at RCRDLBL

And finally some...

You gotta be quick for this one if you're in Vienna... it's tonight! But well worth it with a solid line up which includes some Chrome Kids faves such as Sterotyp, Al Haca and Dorian Concept.

(YSI) Blaqstarr ft Rye Rye - Shake It To The Ground (Stereotyp Minimal Vox Remix)

And in Bristol we're gonna be reaching out to this Crazylegs party in the New Year with: Starkey, Philladelphia Dubstep don and one of Mary Anne Hobbs' Generation Bass; Dexplicit the producer of one of Grime's biggest anthems 'Pow' and now rinsing it in the Bassline house scene; and our main man Raffertie, the bonkers Brum based beat butcherer; plus whole heap of local dons including The Kelly Twins and our good friend Ben One.

Check out the Crazylegs Facebook Group and Events Page for this.

You can listen again to the show online for the next week, we're the third track in. We'll be putting the track up on here in the a couple of weeks time so keep checking back.

Jelluzz - Hold On Video

Another CD that I have to admit I let pass me by until it got lost when I moved house was by this fellas Jelluzz. Not sure if it was a single or album even but after I got sent this video I'm a bit gutted I didn't give it a chance before it dissapeared.

The track has be selected to be used as part of a global PUMA marketing campaign for their new fragrance, hopefully he doesn't have to actually wear the stuff too. He's also been selected as a spokesperson for Love Music Hate Racism. As you may guess from both of these endorsments, Jelluzz is definitely on the positive side of Grime, which should be respected... unfortunately much as I want to like Jelluzz, and it's hard not too, that's the problem. It's all just a little bit too laid back and nicey nicey for my liking (despite efforts on his mixtape to try and prove otherwise), I find myself yearning for a bit of real anger and I a bad person? Yes probably.

Here's a couple of tracks from his Capital Letterz Mixtape too, you can grab the whole thing here.

Silver Joins The Game

Have to admit to passing this by in my inbox for a few days, then had a quick look. 'Newcastle MC meets The Game', that's gotta be wank right? We know the score, some no mark emcee with a big ego and a big overdraft spends a small fortune so a well known yankee who probably doesn't even know his new found rhyming partner's name, can throw away some unfelt and unthought out rhymes...Ignored it some more.

I like to give everything a chance though so after a few days I gave it a little listen... who'd have thought it, the track's actually pretty damn good. The Game sounds more Nas then ever, quite funny as he name checks the biblically deluded one twice in his verse, but he sounds like he put some effort in at least. Never heard of Silver before. Checked back and he's hit and miss but he rides this Sermstyle banger nicely, complimenting The Game well. He's definitely worth keeping an eye on, especially if he stays on those big Sermstyle productions.

Double A Side

Here's a couple of Dubstep freebies courtesy of Dub Frequency Records head honcho Clone A Side. The label's next digital release is a compilation of DFR artists called 'The Structured LP' which drops on January 5th. Not feeling Hoody too strong on the 1st track, it sounds too much like a standard off the cuff freestyle, but it's cool as a promo.

A Mixture of Calligula & Deepak Chopra Perhaps?

Chopigula seem skeptical at the ability of the spoken language to describe the language of music, and we have to admit to being stumped to find a fitting description of their sound.

At first listen, disturbing might be one word we would use to describe the Chopigula project in its 'dimensional' form. The title of their EP ‘ Sunshine Over The Circus’ sounded like such an innocent and sweet affair but on checking out Together Too we imagined visiting the same circus whilst suffering from polymorphic light eruptions and discovering that John Wayne Gacy was the clown. The light tried to shine through but we just couldn't help but feel there were dark undertones dragging it back into the abyss.

Nevertheless, even then it felt more William Burroughs dark than Stephen King. On further listens there is a certain amount of insightful meditation to be had within Chopigula’s somewhat peacefully contented mania. It's reassuringly unhinged and Shade Slicer & Scott Chaurand twisted collages appeal greatly when faced with the standard Electro-fit conveyor belt formulas.

Can Mujava Make Your Mum Dance?

I don’t know what the current club situation is like near you but here it is rather dire. There are many reasons for this, looming recession, smoking ban, etc. But one of the reasons I hardly venture out these days is a lack of exciting artists. Promoters are scared to put on upcoming artists cos the people hardly ever turn up if they don’t know who’s playing, so they put on the same old worn out acts that lost their edge when they fell off it. It’s a vicious circle, but all they need to realise is you simply have to work harder. If people don’t know who you’re putting on, tell them, over and over and over again. It’s still a gamble true, but if you’re not excited enough to tell the world, how can you expect others to be excited enough to spread the word and actually brave the cold and come on down.

Thankfully I was speaking to a promoter the other day who is looking at booking some people who might get us excited. He’s just booked Rico Tubbs for New Years Eve, a fantastic DJ and a fine conker player, plus a few others pencilled in for the coming months. He’s also been listening to our Chrome recommendations so hopefully we shall some our favourites start to pop up. One artist he’s looking at but not quite sure on what vibe he’ll bring is DJ Mujava, Warp Record's new signing out of South Africa. His Township Funk single is a killer and has been popping up everywhere for months but nobody seems to have seen him DJ. The single doesn’t really point at where the set might go. He comes from a Kwaito background so maybe he’ll be bringing that, but much as we love it here at Chrome Kids the scene’s not exactly massive in Wales. So if anyone out there can vouch for Mr Mujava and his party rocking skills please give us a shout so we can let this promoter know.

One DJ we shall definitely be recommending is Mumdance who has just started reaching out on a live DJ / MC tip with long time partners Jammer and C Gritz. Here’s a jam they all put together down in the XL studios chopping up Township Funk and Debonair Samir’s ‘Samir’s Theme’ to ride over.

Oh Shit...It's Christmas

I was slightly taken off guard whilst deejaying on Thursday when somebody came and asked me to play some Christmas music. I stared incredulously and adopted the tone which deejays save for those poor individuals who know no better and reminded her it wasn't Christmas. "But we're on our Christmas Party' she replied. Shit, then maybe it is Christmas... and to be fair it nearly is, but I still refused to acknowledge this fact until Daly City and Lowpro Lounge dropped 'Oh Shit It's Christmas', with a stocking full of fine Electronic artists such as Mochipet, J Tonal and Build 128.

Fair enough the same group of people who had already exhausted a list of demands from Britney through to 'anything old and dancey' might not have appreciated this stuff anyway, but it's certainly made me start to feel festive and might have saved the office Xmas do from my condescending head shaking replies to their requests... nah maybe not.

The Oh Shit, It's Christmas Album is up now on STS9's Record Label. All proceeds from this recording will be donated to The Non-Profit Association Conscious Alliance.

(YSI) Mochipet - Jingle Crunk

(YSI) James Christopher + Zaptap - Christmas 2012 (attack of the mechanical santas)
And if you're still not sure what to ask Santa for then you could do worse than Mochipet's Microphonepet Remixed EP. We've been bumping it hard here at Chrome Mansions. Especially the Starting Teeth Remix of Lazy Day and Boreta's Remix of Rambunktion.

Love Onra & Obey

A fine slice of Hip-hop Digi-Soul wax just landed in our laps from All City Records. It’s #7 in their Beatstrumental series and features young Parisian beatmaker – Onra. Anyone who’s into his fantastic soulful journeys with Quetzal or Byron won’t be disappointed with the A side ‘My Comet’, on some futuristic Luther Vandross style production, whilst ‘Shhhhhh’ is deeper and dirtier, head nodding Ketamine Funk.

Check the snippets then go pick it up at All City, Boomkat, Juno or iTunes

Listening To Skulls Fly

Some may have noticed the distortion on the Daly City Radio show a couple of days back. If this seriously hampered your listening pleasure, have no fear as The Flying Skulls, one of the featured acts has given us a crisp and clean (okay it’s filthy dirty but for all the right reasons) copy of a recent live set they recorded for the Daly City Records' Strawberry & Bacon Festival in San Francisco. Expect 46 mins of Crunked Up Electro Prog-Step with: rhymes by ZapTap; Snareface on the MPC ; keys by Ribotto; Jerome Forney handling dirty basslines and a killer trumpet solo; and then finally J Tonal on the mix, engineering, and executive production.

Mudmowth - Skullcrackology (Associated Minds)

Mudmowth's 'Skullcrackology' was chopped from the original mix for being too damn offensive by the BBC in a post Manuelgate environment, but we figure you lot are made of stern enough stuff to handle it. The PLO produced banger was taken from Mudmowth's new 5 track EP 'Circus In The Cemetry' which you can grab now, on collectable white vinyl, complete with cover artwork from the incredible Mister Shrew, from the Associated Minds Store (including a free signed CD copy)or digitally on iTunes.

Time To Run Riot

A huge bigUP to Juan de Fukyah for waking us from our ignorant sleep and bringing Run Riot Records into our lives. We've been scouring their blog for latest releases and we have found some absolute gemstones.

First up is by DJ Mutamassik, a New York raised ‘Producer/ Musician/ DJ/ Artist/ synesthete and pioneer of the Sa’aidi Hardcore & Baladi Breakbeat Sound.’ Who has been up on top of a Tuscany hill in her Cave Studio putting the finishing touches to her new EP which is due to drop on New Years Day.

A fine and heavy tune, kinda like the soundtrack to a robotic bear being highly magnetised and then having to stomp through an industrial kitchen.

(Direct Link) DJ Mutamassik- 5x8 Cell

Next is from the Touching Further EP from Kitimat out of Canada. Can only really describe this beauty as dirty evil fidgit crunk… yup that would pretty much sum it up.

(Direct Link) Kitimat – Shiftist

Plus check this killer remix too (not on the EP)

(Direct Link) Fabolous - Do The Damn Thang (Kitimat Glacial Mix)

Couldn’t give a better description then RRR themselves for this next track from the new Gouseion LP ‘Nijikon’ – “In the turbid, breathy arpeggiators of Caps 13 come lurking pauses, the gaps in the data collapsing themselves into gasping slow jams, sweat condensing on a water-cooled case.” Exactly.

And if you like this then check his latest Mixtape out too

Now a killer tune from the Artemis Jackson EP ‘Asps & Adders’ that dropped earlier in the year. Right up our street this one, can’t believe we let it pass us by til now. Glad we’ve been given a chance to rectify that, you should make sure you don’t let it get by you either.

(Direct Link) Artemis Jackson - Asps and Adders

Finally this glitchy little headnodder from their newest signing, Brooklyn based YSLE, off the forthcoming Gain Fed LP, is verging on classic Detroit Techno / Chicago House. Or as RRR so finely put it once again “In the twisted, barb-wire whip funk of Radish Patch, synths syrup over icy hats, follow stomping bass drops into echoing strips of hazy deviations, turn around on themselves suddenly like androids dancing to thriller, smearing and jittering apart as the sounds stretch across the breaks like silicon taffy.” That was the one…

Certified Banger Putting UK Hip-hop On The Radar

Certified Banger introduce another element to their mission of bringing fresh UK Hip-hop artists to our ears with their free to download 21 track compilation ‘On The Radar’. Showing us that there are still a few worthy soldiers battling on in the scene (some of these admittedly are a little shell shocked maybe). Have to admit to feeling the Grime flavoured ones a little more here at Chrome Kids but there’s a mixed up bag of goodies in this package so check it out and head over to their blog for the tracklisting and a constant stream of ‘bangers’. Here’s our choice cuts:

(YSI) Queens English – Mind The Gap

(YSI) Skandal – Venom (Clean)

(YSI) Size 8 – Watchin’ Me

And for the whole album:

Triple Chrome Dipped

Think it would be wrong not to feature a video called Triple Chrome Dipped here on Chrome Kids. Especially one as good as this nostalgic collaboration between Ghostly Int. artist Michna and Philly-based video artist System D-128.

Here's a little more info:

"Filmed entirely on a Hi8 analog camcorder purchased in 1989, the footage shows flashes of Adrian Michna's youth from 1989 to 1995: the local pizza shop; the Metro North from Westchester through the Bronx and into Manhattan; skateboarding through Brooklyn; Michna's little brother staging toy-robot wars; band practice; doing donuts in high-school parking lots."

Music To Street Fight To

Does anyone remember the truly awful Street Fighter Movie with Jean Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue? Wouldn't blame you if you blocked it out, but the soundtrack was actually pretty heavy and featured tracks by the likes of Nas, Ice Cube, Paris and The Pharcyde.

Well the folks at Street Fighter have once again shown a keen ear with the soundtrack for their recently released Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on the PSN and XBLA. Their 'Street Fighter Underground Remix Mixtape' has a selection of fine tuneage from: Redman & Oh No; Hieroglyphics, Zion I, DJ Toure, Mistah F.A.B. and Qbert.

Our favourite is the Oh No produced Redman banger 'Lay You Out' which we've included here for all those of you who don't happen to own a Playstation.

Let's just wait and see what the new Chun Li movie soundtrack has in store, the film looks like it might well be gash.
