Kaptin Is Dead - Reflections 2012 by Kaptinisdead on Mixcloud

We haven't done any 'best of' this year but Kaptin has put together a 'reflection selection' for 2012. Here's what he said about it.

"As I enter the final stages of the roller coaster ride that was 2012 I've left little time to consider a 'best of mix' really, with such a good year for music it might possibly last til 2014 anyway. However whilst in Studio 2 of Radio Cardiff I put together this selection of tunes that owe more to the reflective nature of the year's end. No fancy mixing or tricks just some incredible tunes from 2012 played pretty much in their entirety. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have."

Actually the Tensnake remix of Ritual Union came out in 2011 but we'll let him off this once because it was still a great tune in 2012.

Extra Sauce With Your Fries.

As always, there were a few tracks put aside for the show which we just couldn't fit into the final 58mins. We never like to keep tracks til the next fortnight as there's always so many to choose from anyway, so here's a selection of those that we had to miss.

Some warm and jazzy autumnal Soul from Canadian singer Claire Mortifee, produced by Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical aka Potatohead People. This track also features on their excellent 3rd EP out on Jellyfish Recordings, whose other guests include rappers Moka Only and Frank Nitt (Frank N Dank).

Some more soulful vibes from Canada. This track by Vlooper is taken from his recent 'Snowloops' album and also features his wife Modlee. You can grab the album for any price you feel is right below.

Actually now listening back to this Breezy Lovejoy album, it's even more surprising that we didn't play anything from it. Again we're very much still on the Neo-Soul vibe but with that extra kick that keeps it fresh and exciting. You can also pick up the LA based singer / rapper / drummer's first album for free here.

We were possibly judging the whole Chief Navaho album by some of it's dodgier singing excursions so unfairly overlooked this one until it was too late. The rest of the album has some other golden moments but some of the sung vocals do come off rather sketchy at times.

Despite the fact it didn't quite initially grab us we did keep on getting pulled back to this one. It's a track whose charm grows with each listen too.

As well as these gems, FACT Magazine have also posted a free download for this little gem which we did actually play on the show.

If you missed the show entirely, then make sure you go back and check it out.

Bodez - A0

Bad Panda Records just dropped the latest tune from Bodez, aka Chrome Kids founder Kaptin and fellow CK family member Leon Piers (aka Falcon Lake, also half of 22/22). It's little deeper and techy than most of their other work (more in line with some of the Falcon Lake material) but it's still grimey round the edges and has a killer bounce to it too. It's a free download so play it, pawn it and pimp it to the world.

Bodhi Breaking Through

Two of the newest members of the Chrome Kids family have their debut single out via Push & Run on Monday, complete with cover art from our very own SnowSkull. Getting much love for their ShadowBox remix and The xx bootleg, Bodhi are already two of our favourite producers (and DJs after their killer set last Friday) currently making noise out of the Welsh capital and lovely fellas to boot.

Big shouts to anyone who came down to The Plough in Bristol at the weekend. Was a great night and everybody (Jauge, Bodhi, Corner & Kaptin Is Dead) smashed it with their sets. We might just come back for round 2 in the future. However it started off a long and messy Bank Holiday weekend which culminated in Carnival yesterday so rather than break down this last show for you bit by bit, here's the tracklist. Pretty much speaks for itself really. Plus as usual, there's a few links to tunes that didn't quite make it into the final show underneath it.

Tracklist:

AlunaGeorge - Your Drums, Your Love
Shuttle - Wake Up
Jessie Ware - Devotion
Extra Curricular - Last Day
Guido - Africa (Jagos Remix)
Submotion Orchestra - Blindspot (Maribou Remix)
The Insomniax - Atonement (Radio Edit)
Max Butter - Bonjour
Mr Healan - Beaming
Fantastic Mr Fox - Power
Gimmix & Julei - Ciera
Lorn - Weigh Me Down (Mike Slott Remix)
Beacon - Feeling's Gone

In the latest show we have some killer combos as Suzi Analogue + Tokimonsta join forces to unleash their Analogue Monsta album on the world and Jessie Boykins III + Melo-X give us a taster of their upcoming collaboration on Ninja Tune. On the remix tip: Shlohmo takes on his Friends Of Friends label mates LOL Boys; Iamnobodi revisits a brilliant Quadron track from 2009; and Welsh Garage don Didz switches up Monky's 'Free Air'. Plus as always there's a few new ones from established favourites such as Throwing Snow, B.Lewis and Chrome Sparks plus tons of new artists on our radar. You can also check out the forthcoming single from our boys Bodhi which is out on Push & Run early next month.

As always there were many tunes we loved but simply couldn't fit into an hour show. Here's a few of those:

This fortnight's show has a bunch of great remixes: Exeter fiddles with Sizarr, ARP101 touches up Slugabed, Face & Heel tweak Py's buttons a litle and our very own Bodhi gets full on Shades of Grey with The xx. Plus some new artists on the radar such as Julien Mier, Alis and Tere$jenee, some new faves in Two Inch Punch, Ango, Rain Dog and Rudi Zygadlo, topped off with some rapping from Childish Gambino, Ruffest (alongside LV) and Ty + Akua Naru on Shuko's superb soulful tribute to Amy Winehouse.

Also, here's a few of those tunes from the show that you can grab for free download.

Plus as a bonus have this free download of Gweno from our friends Them&Us (aka Killa Kela and Amy Carmine) that was a little too hype for this show this time but worth checking still. You can also check a Stanton Warriors remix of one of their own tracks here.

So with a week to go until the next show again, here's the latest one from last week.

Plus as with last week there's a few tunes we couldn't quite fit in. We've also put up a tune from Monky's excellent forthcoming album for free download up on our Soundcloud (link below).  Make sure you check out the whole thing when it's out next month.  It's called 'Hotel Infinity' and will be dropping on Robox Neotech.

A Weekend In Paradise

One of the reasons the new site just hasn't appeared is an exciting new project that we've been blessed to be involved with.  An incredible new site in London put together for the most part by the Mutate Britain guys and Shangri La crew from Glastonbury Festival.   It's finally opening next week and so just wanted to tell you about the opening, even though it's a bit different to the usual Chrome Kids style (saving that for Bloc which touches down at LPG the weekend after).

As well as loads of great Cabaret, Street Theatre, Pyrotechnics, Markets and Vintage Fairground.  The team has booked some of our favourite and most established live bands from the festival circuit, see below the flyer for a (nearly) full line up of bands and DJs.

Okay we know you're all still waiting for the new blog and getting your teeth into some proper posts but we'd like to think the Radio Show is a healthy snack in the meantime. Here's the latest with new tunes from: Alby Daniels, Pair Of Arrows, Torus, John Talabot, Sun Glitters, Monky, Evian Christ and many more.

Plus here's the free downloads from the show for good measure.

The new look site is nearly done and we're getting set for the changeover. However in the mean time this year also sees the return of our Radio Show, which should also give you an idea of what direction the blog will be taking musically.

If you're feeling the show then please post it around.

We also have a party in the Motherland of Wales this Thursday (19th January) in Buffalo Bar, Cardiff from 10pm til 4am. It will be Stagga (first offical set back home in over a year), Monky, Kaptin, Falcon Lake, Jauge (Live), Maxx Roach and Adam Corner. To celebrate we have a free download courtesy of Falcon Lake.
