This One Time At Bandcamp

This one time at Bandcamp I was listening to one of the guys playing some music. You know, the kind of music which reaches inside your soul and takes you on a journey through your past lives and present memories, the kind that like the 3 ghosts of Christmas demands reflection as well as assessment and even a promise to the future. It was the type of company needed to guide you through the low moments, to help calm the rough waves and so ride them to the edge rather than trying to escape and have them crashing down on you later. It was a semi-meditative state without sacrificing consciousness and it was clarity without regimented conformity. It was pianos and strings, synths and glitched up beats, it was decidely beautiful and it was also being played by the same Josh Mayer sometimes known as Ooah from The Glitch Mob and PANTyRAID. It was Of Porcelain and you can pick up the album at Bandcamp now for whichever price you choose, we think it's worth a fair amount mind.

One band I'm almost always guaranteed to catch at Festivals, and they seem to always be there, is Babyhead. Not something I would complain about mind, their high energy mix of Ska, Funk and Hip-hop is highly infectious and never fails to get even the most beaten of bodies bouncing. Something happened this year however, things have changed somewhat in the Babyhead camp. They are no less infectious and no less hypnotising in both music and performance but there's a deeper, darker depth to their music. A maturity of experience and perhaps frustration that might alienate some of the strictly jump up funsters but that for those who have matured alongside has perhaps even more resonance than before and is reflective of the times within which they are a changing in. You can pick up their new 3 track EP for free also on Bandcamp.

West Coast V East Coast

No we haven't decided to revive a pointless rivalry that ends up with some people shot and others very rich... okay maybe a little bit, but really it's simply a tenuous link because we happen to have some great stuff to post from New York and some other fantastic stuff from the California area.

First up, dope LA based beats and bass lovin' blog I Am A Laser has schooled us on a producer / DJ from the city called R/D. Coming out of the same scene as Glitch Mob, the sound on this Mini Mix created from tracks off his new Cricket EP is a touch on the lighter side than the Mob's full force club attacks and is rather more similar to what we've heard so far from the PANTyRAID project, no bad thing at all.

You can catch an interview with R/D over at the I Am A Laser blog

Plus Daly City affiliate Preshish Moments has released a Free EP of twisted style glitchy Turbo Crunk that shows a little something of his Breakcore past. Grab the EP here.

Regular readers will already be aware of South Bronx rapper June, well it's his month so it's only right we post his new track featuring fellow BX spitters AB3 & Kool and some extremely minimalist production from Ron Browz.

He's also dropped a new Mixtape hosted by the one and only Cipha Sounds.

Finally, relative newcomers to the game 13/13 out of Brooklyn have hit us up with an ecletic range of remixes, all of which have had our heads nodding here in Chrome Mansions. Our favourite is probably this re-edit of a classic that doesn't stray far enough from the original to be sacrilegeous but has an extra touch of dirty bass synths to keep it fresh enough to bring back into our sets again.

We also have something of a guilty pleasure soft spot for both Lionel and Saved by the Bell, so had to get this in some place too.

Mini Mixing It Up

A mini mix of sub bass heavy, glitchy Hip-hop grinders here for you courtesy of Chip Chop, a live production and percussion duo made up of Graintable from Portland (OR) and AD/AM out of Lake Tahoe (CA). 10 tracks of filthiness that does kind of feel like one long and rather intense 20 minute tune, but not necessarily in a tedious way.

Also on a similar tip, we have been absolutely killing a track called Beba, which is the new single from PANTyRAID (aka Glitch Mob's Ooah and West Coast compadre Marty Party) dropping on Marine Parade at the end of next month, it's B Side Get The Money is also fastly growing on us. Both of them are a touch more Dubstep then the Glitch Mob material but Beba still retains those Crunk-ish overtones, helped even further on this mini mix that featured on Mary Anne Hobbs' show a couple of weeks back by fusing it with a Lil Jon accapella.
