Happy New Year

Right lets jump straight into the New Year. We got some big tunes for you all from some friends and family, so here's to a big 2011 for you all.

Astroid Boys spent the last day of 2010 in the Studio so that they can start the year with a fresh tune for you all. Over some 'dutty stinkin' beat from Curtamos, the boys bring some 'rawdiness' to the proceedings with this one.

Rawdeee (FREE/DOWNLOAD) HAPPY NEW YEAR BOOM ! (CURTAMOS PRODUCTIONS) by Astroid Boys

Mochipet invokes the spirit of the now deceased caffeine heavy US energy drink Four Loko with this hyper crunked up remix of Oakland's Hottub.

The Glitch Mob have had a great year and so as a thank you to all the people who supported them through it they're giving away the version of Drive It Like You Stole It that could be found on their Drink The Sea Part 2: Mixtape

We've also had a great year, albeit something of a blur now. If you need a little recap on what's been going on in the wider world in 2010 (or at least in the UK), here's our amigo Mystro with his UK 2010 Rap Up.

Who's Ya Kraddy?

Although we are definitely feeling the new Glitch Mob album here in Chrome Mansion we know a few of you out there were less than chuffed with their change in direction that meant a lack of ‘glitches, crazy edits or bizarre effects’ and less of a club selection. If that was you then keep an ear out for the new album from Kraddy that’s due to drop on Alpha Pup soon. Although we’re yet to hear the album ourselves, we know he’s still very much a fan of the ‘glitch’ in his music and if this exclusive mash up he passed us is anything to go by then all those elements will be in full effect on the ex Mob-ster’s next offering.

Bassnectar On Seek & Destroy Mission

Funny how some bands get properly arsey about sampling still. If it wasn't for Hip-hop it would probably have taken me a whole lot longer to venture into my father's jazz collection, and many a great band has been discovered due to seeking out a sneaky sample. Part of it is translating the material into a language the new listener can understand. Once that barrier has been broken down it makes the next conversation, that could be alot more intense, a hell of a lot easier to digest. For example, I've never been a Metallica fan. It's not that I don't like or respect them, they just weren't in my radar growing up and so my tastes were defined by different cultural markers. However I have been a massive Bassnectar fan for a while now (essentially the music represents the combination of a number of my youthful music loves) and with his latest bootleg he has translated Metallica's Seek & Destroy just perfectly into a headbanging, foot stomping slice of pure unadulterated Crunk Rock.

You can share this track with your peoples directly from the Bassnectar Website and also join up to the email list so you can be even more on it with new releases than we are.

We've also been sent this rather epic gift in the shape of Glitch Mob's new remix for French Electro producer Krazy Baldhead. Rolling in at 9 minutes long, this is probably where Funkadelic would be now if George Clinton had discovered computers instead of crack, only without the rainbow headed genius on vocal duty.

This One Time At Bandcamp

This one time at Bandcamp I was listening to one of the guys playing some music. You know, the kind of music which reaches inside your soul and takes you on a journey through your past lives and present memories, the kind that like the 3 ghosts of Christmas demands reflection as well as assessment and even a promise to the future. It was the type of company needed to guide you through the low moments, to help calm the rough waves and so ride them to the edge rather than trying to escape and have them crashing down on you later. It was a semi-meditative state without sacrificing consciousness and it was clarity without regimented conformity. It was pianos and strings, synths and glitched up beats, it was decidely beautiful and it was also being played by the same Josh Mayer sometimes known as Ooah from The Glitch Mob and PANTyRAID. It was Of Porcelain and you can pick up the album at Bandcamp now for whichever price you choose, we think it's worth a fair amount mind.

One band I'm almost always guaranteed to catch at Festivals, and they seem to always be there, is Babyhead. Not something I would complain about mind, their high energy mix of Ska, Funk and Hip-hop is highly infectious and never fails to get even the most beaten of bodies bouncing. Something happened this year however, things have changed somewhat in the Babyhead camp. They are no less infectious and no less hypnotising in both music and performance but there's a deeper, darker depth to their music. A maturity of experience and perhaps frustration that might alienate some of the strictly jump up funsters but that for those who have matured alongside has perhaps even more resonance than before and is reflective of the times within which they are a changing in. You can pick up their new 3 track EP for free also on Bandcamp.

Mini Mixing It Up

A mini mix of sub bass heavy, glitchy Hip-hop grinders here for you courtesy of Chip Chop, a live production and percussion duo made up of Graintable from Portland (OR) and AD/AM out of Lake Tahoe (CA). 10 tracks of filthiness that does kind of feel like one long and rather intense 20 minute tune, but not necessarily in a tedious way.

(YSI) Chip Chop Mini Mix / alt link

Tracklist:

00:00 - The Edinburgh
03:00 - Untitled & Unfinished
04:08 - Untitled & Unfinished
05:58 - Puking Rainbows
08:20 - Untitled & Unfinished
09:10 - Los Gorditos
13:03 - Solid Gold Nunchucks
16:00 - FPFTF
18:27 - Untitled & Unfinished
19:27 - Launch Blank

The duo are set to be featured on this summer's Motion Sickness compilation from the fantastic Run Riot Records. So if you're feeling this keep an ear out for that one.

Also on a similar tip, we have been absolutely killing a track called Beba, which is the new single from PANTyRAID (aka Glitch Mob's Ooah and West Coast compadre Marty Party) dropping on Marine Parade at the end of next month, it's B Side Get The Money is also fastly growing on us. Both of them are a touch more Dubstep then the Glitch Mob material but Beba still retains those Crunk-ish overtones, helped even further on this mini mix that featured on Mary Anne Hobbs' show a couple of weeks back by fusing it with a Lil Jon accapella.

Tracklist:

Upset / Beba Mashup (with Lil John Acapella)
Crunkalicious’
Worship the Sun’
Headcase (with Ray Cash ‘Sex Appeal’ Acapella)

One Millionth Of A Mash Up

Don't know why it took so long to click that DJ 0.000001 (One Millionth) is infact Th' Mole, an artist we've been lovin' recently and who we shall be covering in a bit more depth soon enough. But for now here's his brilliant mash up of ODB's Shimmy Shimmy Ya and the Glitch Mob remix of Matty G's West Coast Rocks.

(YSI) DJ 0.000001 - Ooh Baby I Like It Hard (Glitch Mob Vs Matty G Vs ODB)

If you fancy trying your hand at a remix of this remix (sure there's some Postmodern thinker's who'd have plenty to say on this concept) then head over to the Daly City blog and pick up a zip file with all the necessary parts.

Glitch In The System

I frickin' love Glitch Mob. For me they defined much of last year both individually and as a crew, but for those who've missed out on their releases so far they've helpfully sewn together this handy catch up mix with everything from edIT's seminal The Game Is Not Over to their remix of Matty G's West Coast Rocks, down through the phat thumpin' Kraddy track Android Porn to their monster sized remix of Evil Nine's All The Cash, arguably one of the Top 5 remixes of last year. If you are ignorant of their weighty brilliance, or even if you're already well aware, then grab yourself a quick lesson.
