Do Androids Attend Electric Sheep?

Good Monday people, hopefully you will have recovered from this Weekend's festivities in tine for the coming Bank Holdiay weekend, as we are programming an event at Cardiff Arts Institute from Friday to Sunday. Many of the acts playing will be recognisable to our regular readers and if you are anywhere near the vicinity would be great to see you all. Here's the info...

ELECTRIC SHEEP WEEKENDER
Friday 27th - Sunday 29th May 2011 (Bank Holiday Weekend)
Cardiff Arts Institute, 29 Park Place. CF10 3BA
£4 per day (limited £6 passes for all 3 days)

3 SECRET HEADLINERS // DOC DANEEKA + BENJAMIN DAMAGE (LIVE) // MONKY (HOYA HOYA / ROBOX NEOTECH) // DIDZ & CHICO (TEN THOUSAND YEN) // RATCATCHER // TELEGRAM FROM THE QUEEN (JUVENILE SCUM) // MR HEALAN // DAI VERSE (DIVERSE CONCEPTS) // CHROME KIDS // ZWOLF // OWAIN K // STD // DISCORD // KOVAS (64 BARS) // MAXX ROACH //

The Welsh Electronic scene has truly coming into it’s own over the past few years. As musical genres overlap and intertwine, particularly after the Bass music scene in general’s mass migration from formulaic Dubstep, so Wales’ tight knit community of producers and DJs become ever closer, more open and undoubtedly stronger. As celebration of this fact we have brought some of the top artists from the scene together for a long Bank Holiday weekend of showcases, secret sets and a whole lot of drinking and dancing.

We have 3 Secret headliners, all well established acts at the top of their game, plus: Modeselektor’s label signings Doc Daneeka and Ben Damage showcase their new live set ahead of their Melt! Festival debut in Berlin; one of the city’s most forward thinking producers, Monky gets set to show why his future blend of bass heavy beats have been getting so much love across the electronic music world; Cardiff 2 Step tearaways Didz & Chico bring a little ‘something new’ to the table; Chrome Kids drop a rare appearance ahead of shows in Glastonbury and Bestival over the summer; experimental circuit benders Zwolf, STD and Mr Healan step out of the Hip-hop shadows into something altogether more interesting; former CRST member Ratcatcher (Rodski) and Owain K hold it down for the current generation of House producers; whilst Juvenile Scum head honchos and Dirty Sanchez DJs Telegram From The Queen, to quote Redman, ‘come to throw a little mud in this mother**ker’ and make sure proceedings don’t get too serious. With many more up and coming DJs and producers, just starting to cement their reputations as ones to watch also on the bill, this is undoubtedly going to be a great marker on where the scene is now and where it’s heading. There’s plenty more information on each act, as well as free downloads, streaming tracks and videos over at the Cardiff Arts Institute blog http://cardiffartsinstitute.org

More info can be found on the Cardiff Arts Institute Website.

Demokracy - Double Star

Featured on this blog three weeks ago, Russia’s Demokracy return on Robox Neotech with the upcoming Double Star EP. It’s a wildly assorted partypack of bass flavours, kicking off with the out-and-out bombast of the opening title track, which has a distinct whiff of heavy metal about it. Elsewhere influences from Zomby to Drexciya rear their heads, meshed into spangled dubstep/hiphop beat stylings, cold, blippy synthlines and the occasional (if I’m honest) slightly iffy vocal sample. Messy but well worth checking – as are the two freebies below, which showcase the duo's restless sound.

Demokracy - Starhaven (320)

Demokracy’s Damscray has also been busying himself with some solo action and has an EP dropping soon. His excellent refix of P-Fang’s “Graveyard” slings some jukey drum patterns into the pot for good measure.

While we’re on the subject, Robox are giving a big push to the rest of their roster with material in the pipeline. Pick of these is probably Nasty Nasty, whose “No Names VIP” sets a yearning vocal snippet riding over an oily b-line, and is available for download via Soundcloud.

No Names VIP by NastyNasty

And an honourable mention goes out to Darkhouse Family, now also hooked up with the label. The nutso, skittering “Snaggle Tooth” is a strong recent addition to their Soundcloud page.

Healan Power

Anybody keeping an eye towards the goings on of our Mixcloud page would have noticed this rather fine mix of Future Funk flavours from our Cardiff bredren Mr Healan, who was one of the number of acts from the city featured on Starkey's recent Sub FM show (the Philadelphia phuture trooper has also been bigging up the city in his Facebook feed - see we told you our hometown was doing it).

We’ve had an eye on Mr Healan’s productions for a while and it certainly seems that he’s found a perfect home in the current climate. Starting off in the Drum N Bass scene under the name Haze he was resident DJ alongside High Contrast at nights such as Silent Running and Enthusiasm. He has a great ear for subs and drum patterns and has definitely taken in the journeys of Hip-hop’s post Dilla producers as well as the current Dubstep generation. He has recently cropped up on Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 1Xtra and has been staking his name into the general arena like a flag in a battle zone. This mix he did for us gives a taste of his influences, innovations and collaborations. We like it very much and we think you might to. Listen above and if you're feeling it, download the whole mix below.

Keep It On The DL

Our boy Mikee Woo has been putting in work on the Cardiff club scene for time now and has just set up a new Tuesday night at Buffalo called Signature that is set to make us very happy. This Tuesday coming (1st June) he's got New York Future Garage master Falty DL in the place so we've been busting out his tracks full volume here at Chrome Mansions to get us over hyped. Plus there's support from Don Leisure, Mr Healan and Paul B so looks like the Bank Holiday weekend has just been extended to Wednesday.

The Bass Too Darkhouse

When compiling our Monday Mixtapes we scandalously overlooked this one from our boys Don Leisure and Metabeats aka Darkhouse Family, who shall be dropping a 12" on Fat City mid April some time.

This mix also contains the future garage track Baduka from Metabeats' alter ego Chesus and fellow Barry dweller Diverse Concepts which we posted earlier and is looking at getting a release sometime soon through Ten Thousand Yen.

The Don's Leisurely Mix For January

Don Leisure returns with a new mix of the month, featuring bags of funk and soul added to the clunk click glitch fuzz of the LA, Detroit and Glasgow post Hip-hop schools of music. Includes a new tune from the man himself which is perhaps fittingly dedicated to the LA Lakers forward and Clippers General Manager Elgin Baylor (see / hear below).

Deadly Blossom

It's rare indeed that we'll post any straight up Drum N Bass tracks, but what with us being all up in Knowledge Mag and dropping a DnB tune in our mix from Baobinga & ID that you might not have expected and two straight up Jungle offerings from both Count & Sinden and Stagga (which may find it's way into the blogosphere soon), it seems like the perfect time to drop these exlusives on your eardrums from Jamal.

This tune has been floating about for a while on BBC 1Xtra and mixes from the likes of Infiltrata (aka West Coast Dubstep don 12th Planet) but until now has never properly seen the light of day, despite much nagging. Don't let the name and floaty eastern sounding samples fool you, this is some dangerous bass heavy tear out bizness indeed.

Download: Jamal - Blossom (Rolling Mix v.1) / alt link

Jamal has been in the studio cooking up some new tracks but his Jeckyl and Hyde style alter ego Don Leisure is keeping his side of things pretty much locked down at the moment, with his Darkhouse Family project alongside Metabeats gaining much love from the likes of Waajeed, Gaslamp Killer, Illum Sphere and Martyn, plus radio plays on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra amongst many. The first official taster from that should come on Volume 2 of Fat City's fairly seminal Producer compilation out next month. Check the incredible full line up for that here.

If you need to mellow out after all that jumping about then maybe this might help to sooth your soul slightly. Also hailing from the Cardiff area, Easy Buffalo just hit us with this funkalicious little Gorillaz bootleg. They also have a few tracks in the pipeline with some of our favourite smoothed out Welsh rappers such as Redeye, Skunkadelic and Louis Boston, we've had a little taster and should hopefully be able to share a little something more with you all soon.
