- CanDo

A Scribble Jam winner and Low End Theory host, NoCanDo is no stranger to those with any kind of connection to the current West Coast scene, so it's perhaps a little surprising then that his debut full length is only just upon us. Dropping courtesy of Daddy Kev's Alpha Pup label and with a producer line up that includes the likes of Nosaj Thing, Daedelus, Free the Robots and Thavius Beck, we were obviously excited about this album before it even hit the player. It doesn't dissapoint either, one of the most well rounded Hip-hop albums for a long time Nocando switches up styles, flows and deliveries in a way that truly showcases his long term love of the music without having his nostalgia chip jammed in any particular heyday. From crunked up club bangers to more instrospective head nodders, this is serious business which never takes itself too seriously.

The West Coast Hip-hop scene has always been a diverse and divided bag of noise. From classic Gangsta Rap to the Good Life Cafe attendees back in the late 80s and 90s, or Bay Area Hyphy and the kind of artists who grace the upper echelons of Low End Theory. Although this album is perhaps a little too grown up to truly cross over and a little too contemporary for the traditionalists, it joins the dots for the current scenes well and in many ways brings everything else up to date. Grab it!

Jimmy The Lock is out on Alpha Pup from January 26th but we have a copy of the new single for you here.

Monday Mixtapes On Mars

First up Pete Concrete gives us an insight into his leftside listening habits which shows some of the inspiration between the top choices he makes for the releases on his own Eat Concrete imprint (Take, Herrmutt Lobby, Bretzel Zoo, Aardvarck, etc); Next we have many a twisted turn in Lazyboy's (fyi - not our hombre Rob Da Bank, Dan Carey or the dude from Aqua) mix of 'Future Step, Cosmic Garage and Chip Tune Grime'; and finally El-Mahdy R brings us our first mixtape from Turkey which is more in the straight up Dubstep realm but which, like all the mixes today stays warm and grown up but with more than a hint of youthful mischeviousness and just a touch of menace.

We're Playing Master P On Atari

The Daly City don of digitally crunked up dirt and devastation, Mochipet, is back with a new album that's more raw to the core than anything that's come before.

Where as Microphonepet was largely about big beats for the guests to ride on and to be honest Bunnies & Muffins pretty much snuck past us, Master P On Atari is all about gargantuan beats that are so in your face it would be impossible to ignore. They've literally taken over and they're pissed off, ready to trample buildings and fling trucks about. The sound is probably best described by taking random words from the track titles, such as: Hyphy; Turbo; Sumo; Robo; Crunk; Bass; Ghetto; Godzilla; and straight up Full Frontal Face Melt.

Master P On Atari is out July 4th on Daly City. Here's a track from the album...

(YSI) Mochipet - Turbo Thizz Petnation / alt link

Plus if like us you need to play catch up slightly, here's a track from the Bunnies & Muffins album, featuring the delightfully dapper genius of Daedelus.

Music From Some Friends Of Friends

Our favourite dubiously adopted Welshman Daedelus has just dropped a great disco-esque mini album on the new Friends Of Friends label. The album is split with fellow muso pal Jogger, who on the next edition will then invite somebody else, and so on and so forth.

Buy the album

He has also recorded a video for one of the tracks from the album which has just been premiered on XLR8R.com... and here tis.

If you happen to be cruising by XLR8R.com it's also worth checking out their latest Podcast from Meanest Man Contest, one for the grown ups on a summer evening.

Daedelus on Wales

You can listen to our BBC Radio 1 show for a few more hours here folks. Don't worry though if you miss it we shall be uploading the whole thing pretty soon (plus Huw Evans this weeks presenter will be playing some great Hudson Mohawke and Rustie tracks in his selection. Before we do just wanted to share this moment from the show with you all. Some may be aware of Daedelus' Wales 'obsession'. He used to tell people he was Welsh and called an album Of Snowdonia (a mountainous area up north from where we're based) and has had a long relationship with the country even before visiting. He was extremely kind enough to send us this track in which he talks about his feelings over one of our favourite tracks from the last album 'Hrs:Mins:Secs' and we were extremely touched. If we may be spokesmen for our country then the feeling is entirely mutual sir.

Enter The Dragon

Last night we showed off our roots a little bit and did a Welsh Hip-hop Mix for Rob Da Bank & Friends on BBC Radio 1. The mix is probably the most definitive yet for the Welsh Hip-hop scene and incorporates a wide variety of styles. It also shows that far from being an isolated and backwards country as many people in the rest of the UK, and even some in Wales itself would believe, we have emcees from all over the country, from all over the world infact who have congregated here and helped to add to that rich diversity. There are also some great collaborations by Welsh artists with emcees from California, Philadelphia and London on the mix too. Take a listen, we have also included many of the tracks for download via YouSendIt here as well.

Any questions about the artists or the scene in general then hit me up on whosthecaptain@hotmail.com

Prepare for The Reformation

One of the other groups to perform at Swn is North Waleian rappers Y Diwygiad (The Reformation). One of my favourite groups out of the Welsh speaking crew, although they also flip it and rap in English too. They’ve just sent over a copy of their new album but I’m currently kicking myself cos it arrived the day I moved house and now I can’t find the damned thing. Still I have heard a few tracks off it and I’m pretty confident it’s a killer. Below is a link to a programme that went out the other night on S4C (co-hosted by BBC Radio 1 presenter and Swn curator Huw Stephens) which follows them on a recent trip to LA where they recorded with Daedelus, who seems to have something of a Welsh fetish (and who can blame him). The new album drops this month so make sure you check that out.

They also performed at Daedalus’ album launch party alongside the likes of Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer. You can catch them at Swn Festival here in the Welsh capital alongside Metabeats, Chipmunk, Beatbox Fozzy and High Contrast on Saturday night at The Point in Cardiff Bay. Free to Swn wristband holders or £10 without.

Y Diwygiad in LA on Bandit TV (S4C) November 2008

The programme is all in Welsh but if you don’t speak the language, click on the owl symbol and it brings up English subtitles.
