Doing Things Boperly

I know this won't be popular amongst producers but I'm getting to the stage where I don't have the patience for most laid back instrumentals. Few break particularly new ground so I tend to need a vocal to bring me in a bit further so I can really feel it. Even great beats frustrate me as I can hear vocals for them in my mind generally. However, there are a few that still manage to take me by the eardrums and lead me off somewhere special. This Boperly (pronounced Bah-per-lee) is one of those tracks… although truth be told, in the back of my mind I'd still love to hear a nice jazzy female vocal on it.

In the latest show we have some killer combos as Suzi Analogue + Tokimonsta join forces to unleash their Analogue Monsta album on the world and Jessie Boykins III + Melo-X give us a taster of their upcoming collaboration on Ninja Tune. On the remix tip: Shlohmo takes on his Friends Of Friends label mates LOL Boys; Iamnobodi revisits a brilliant Quadron track from 2009; and Welsh Garage don Didz switches up Monky's 'Free Air'. Plus as always there's a few new ones from established favourites such as Throwing Snow, B.Lewis and Chrome Sparks plus tons of new artists on our radar. You can also check out the forthcoming single from our boys Bodhi which is out on Push & Run early next month.

As always there were many tunes we loved but simply couldn't fit into an hour show. Here's a few of those:

Healan Power

Anybody keeping an eye towards the goings on of our Mixcloud page would have noticed this rather fine mix of Future Funk flavours from our Cardiff bredren Mr Healan, who was one of the number of acts from the city featured on Starkey's recent Sub FM show (the Philadelphia phuture trooper has also been bigging up the city in his Facebook feed - see we told you our hometown was doing it).

We’ve had an eye on Mr Healan’s productions for a while and it certainly seems that he’s found a perfect home in the current climate. Starting off in the Drum N Bass scene under the name Haze he was resident DJ alongside High Contrast at nights such as Silent Running and Enthusiasm. He has a great ear for subs and drum patterns and has definitely taken in the journeys of Hip-hop’s post Dilla producers as well as the current Dubstep generation. He has recently cropped up on Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 1Xtra and has been staking his name into the general arena like a flag in a battle zone. This mix he did for us gives a taste of his influences, innovations and collaborations. We like it very much and we think you might to. Listen above and if you're feeling it, download the whole mix below.

Nearly Missed The Monday Mixtape

Whoops the Christmas situation has thrown our days into even more confusion then usual, we only just figured out it was Monday in time to hit you with these. No tracklistings unfortunately but the first is forged from beats entirely of San Fran 'Blap' pioneer Dnae Beat's making, whilst the second is more of a straight up Hip-hop offering from the Associated Minds' catalogue, past present and still to drop including Metabeats, Ruffstylz, Mudmowth, Dubbledge and Elucid.

Christmas On The Moon

Just had this warm and fun little festive EP to help ease the ever decreasing temperature around Chrome Mansions. It's from the Black Power Arrangers, what appears to be a collaboration between THEE Satisfaction and erm, other people. It's essentially a beats snippets album of the Madlib kind with a lush blend of jazz, Hip-hop and electronic beats but using Christmas classics for the large part and the spirit of Christmas for the rest. You can download / listen at Bandcamp and we've included a couple of choice cuts below.

Fusing the soulful sounds of the 80s such as Rare Groove & New Jack Swing with a new skool off kilter Hip-hop sound and touches of House, Stevie J aka West London based beat maker, Funkineven 1956 steps nicely into the warm, fuzzy and funkadafied musical family that is Eglo Records alongside fellow siblings Floating Points, Fatima and Shuanise.

(YSI) Funkineven 1956 - You! / alt link

And seeing as we're steppin' into that Gilles Peterson / Ross Allen type territory with these it's a good excuse to drop a couple of Seiji tracks aimed at the other end of the dancefloor, some dope Broken Beatish bounce alongs. Now I know there's some emcees out there that could jump on these and bring a bit more of our flavour to them, you might even find a few more over at his blog too.

Weather Or Not

With the weather here in Wales being as unpredictable as always, not sure whether to put up a a bright and sunny track or a more melancholic rainy one... so here's both.

First up is from George Lenton, who some might recognise from the dope MGMT and The King Blues remixes we included on our Hulk Hop Vs Crunk Rock mixtape. This is rather different to those. Although it's not necessarily happy, there's definitely a spring chirpiness to it. Vocals here are from Liz Lawrence whose solo acoustic tracks are definitely worth checking out too.

Next is actually from a Hungarian Indie / Dance band we've been listening to called Mizantrop. Some great stuff but this moody instrumental track in particular caught our Chrome plated ear drums.

(YSI) Mizantrop - Jenny / alt link

Got 60Hz on Lloop

Just discovered Brooklyn producer Lloop, from the electronic band WE™ who dropped the Dubstep-esque '60 Hertz’ late last year. Whilst being far from bright and breezy it is never quite as dark in its depth as some of the stuff we’ve posted recently. We’re talking Ibiza mornings after a wreckage rather than skint London winter nights. Tracks leave enough space for thought although The Cholas, Honch and ODB Scripta Elegans are more aggressive in their approach and are better for sulking then thinking.

The Cutler Did It

Don't really know much about The Cutler except that they consist of Steve Cobby (Fila Brazillia / The Solid Doctor / Heights Of Abraham / J*S*T*A*R*S) & Porky (Head Honcho of Pork Recordings) and they produce the kind of easy yet epic and edgy (entertaining, esoteric, extraordinary and exceedingly good would have simply been too many Es for a Thursday afternoon) type of tracks that Pork have been excelling at for years. Think I might have come across them by accident on Myspace but they were kind enough to send me a couple of tracks to share, so here goes.

(YSI) The Cutler - Weltschmerz

(YSI) The Cutler - Scimitar

They also have an album out on Steel Tiger, buy it here

Spot The Leoparden

Don’t know much about Leoparden except that: he’s from Stockholm; makes exceptionally good Glitch ridden beats that range from atmospheric to optimistic; and has two other fantastically named music projects called :ö: and soonmoonsoon (with fellow Swede Suzywan).

He is also giving away his new album oneone absolutely free – download it here...

Or check out a couple of choice cuts first...

Bass - How Far Can You Go?

Montreal DJ / Producer Ghislain Poirier’s productions, in particular those on his latest release for Ninja Tunes ‘No Ground Under’ betray a keen ear for big dutty tunes from all over the world. Anyone who has been to his club night Bounce Le Gros, where he drops a mix of global Hip hop, Grime, Bali beats, Booty bass, Crunk, Baltimore and more, may lay testament to that, but for those who haven’t comes his brand new mix Cosmopolitan Bass. A journey round the world from the comfort of your own private dance floor taking in artists from Montréal, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Jamaïca, Sweden, France, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Haïti, Barbados, Trinidad, UK, Senegal, etc.

It’s not always easy to get heads to open up enough to take in the sights and sounds of Global goodness but Ghislain has the right kinda bass to bind it all and also the right attitude to see it through.

“it's not easy playing that music. But, fuck, I like it ! So I just imposed it to the people and it's working pretty good”

(Z Share)Ghislain Poirier - Cosmopolitan Bass
