Kotchy drops a free concept album... have to say we heartily approve of the tunes and the reason behind them.

"Baggy Spandex came about by a complete chance encounter on a dark street in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood on the way home from a night out. Kotchy was walking along and finding a box of old albums on the sidewalk decided to have a look. As he was checking out the wax the front door opened and out walked Janine from Ghostbusters (the Secretary and Rick Moranis’ Girlfriend) wearing a very confounding pair of baggy spandex shorts. It was decided then that Kotchy would go straight home, taking the albums with him and make an album comprised entirely of samples from this collection. It’s dedicated to Janine and it’s called Baggy Spandex!"

As you might have expected we have been loving the new Elucid album. But we wanted to know if our feelings and thoughts on the Sub Bass Diet had any correlation to the feelings and thoughts that went behind making it, so we asked Elucid to break the spirit of the album down for us, turns out we are definitely on the same page.

Here's what he had to say...

The Sub Bass Diet is relevant because of its fearlessness. The old model of selling music has all but vanished and NOW is the time for artists to experiment and be bold enough to not really give a fuck about popular opinion. That spirit of rebellion has always informed my music and I stuck to my guns here with The Sub Bass Diet. I set out recording SBD without any sense of nostalgia for the past (and a thorough disgust for the present) I looked ahead and tried to make music I felt was a foundation for the future. Dubstep and other digital bass heavy rhythms only matched the vibes I was bringing across lyrically.

With the title playing on The South Beach Diet I imagined the music as a method to shedding the dead weight of life and stepping into new consciousness for myself. This is reflected throughout the project. Messages of self love, vision, purpose and determination are there for those who need it. But where there's love, trust there's destruction around the corner. Destruction of outdated ways of thinking,interaction, egomania, class/race/gender inequalities and all that separate us from truth.

Alot of rappers are now starting to get over there fear of Dubstep, only takes a few bootlegs before they realise you don't have to go double time or Grime style to make it work. Elucid is one rapper that has no fear whatsoever in stepping to any type of riddim and this time he's murking a Joker track, who's moody frustrated production is a perfect bed for Elucid to lay down some of his own economic frustrations. My Mayor is a Billionaire is taken from the Brooklyn bass fiend's forthcoming Sub Bass Diet project.

Love the Timbaland produced original of this from the Kizzaland Mixtape (mixed by Nick Catchdubs). This refix from Berlin's DJ Wool changes the vibe up, turning it into a somewhat brooding Electro House track. More feet to the floor than hands in the air but dope none the less.

Just discovered Brooklyn producer Lloop, from the electronic band WE™ who dropped the Dubstep-esque '60 Hertz’ late last year. Whilst being far from bright and breezy it is never quite as dark in its depth as some of the stuff we’ve posted recently. We’re talking Ibiza mornings after a wreckage rather than skint London winter nights. Tracks leave enough space for thought although The Cholas, Honch and ODB Scripta Elegans are more aggressive in their approach and are better for sulking then thinking.

This video just dropped on YouTube for the Starkey remix of ‘Firewalk With Us’ from Brooklyn Grime crew Os Crunc Tesla & the Fearless Vampire Killer Arcestra. The original track was featured on last years ‘The Unexpektheadz 2’ compilation on French label Ekler O Shock and then released on the ‘Firewalk With US’ EP from the Luv Technologies label. The track features K-Swift (from New York, no relation to the late great Baltimore queen), Seraphim and DJ Raedawn (who I believe is also Crunc Tesla).




Philladelphia Bass producer Starkey was one of the featured artists on Mary Anne Hobbs’(soon to be seminal) Generation Bass programme last week and this remix looks to be featured on a remix EP coming out on Dead Homies which will probably also feature remixes from Bristol all rounder Awkward, fellow Brooklyn resident DJ Oddfellow and Queens based Londoner Natz, as they are already out there (using the same video).
