CKFR #004 Stagga - Staggamuffin EP

‘Behind the curtain of everyday consciousness is hidden another unutterably strange mental universe.’

So states the opening line of The LSD User, the first track off this killer selection of exclusive dubz from Chrome Kids family member Stagga. Indeed this quote sums up the workings of the EP rather well and you don’t need hallucinogenic drugs to appreciate (although it might help).

Enter a universe in which the hazy memories from generations of bass and raving culture meet cinematic sci-fi at its glossiest. Where classic Kingston sound clashes have been re-constructed on the Enterprise holodeck so we can bear witness to Duke Reid stepping up into the arena sporting a shiny new pair of phaser guns in his holsters before dropping Rocking Down The House and reducing the opposition to rubble. Where Predator joined forces with King Willy’s Voodoo gang, driving around pumping the creep-stepping Science Of Skank through the tinted windows of his low riding space cruiser. A universe that allows the Cybermen to steal the Tardis and go joyriding back to a 90s rave, but then gets them stuck at the tail end of the timewarp to experience the twisted synths and basslines of Determined Dub. Unutterably strange maybe, but unquestionably good.

Stagga’s dubz have been played out by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, N Type, Starkey, Raffertie, T Minus, Hatcha, Chef and RSD, and this selection has been hand-picked by us to guarantee that they’ll tear down the dancefloor at any Dubstep jam. If you’re feeling them then don’t forget to check out Stagga’s other releases on Rag & Bone, Rudeez and Robox Neotech.

Please notice that this is a limited Fre-release and will only be available for a short period.

The original to Determined on the EP was this track, a reworking of the Goldie track Terminator. After hearing of Goldie's general disapproval of being bootlegged, Stagga took out a few bits and pieces before building it back up. Both versions I'm sure you'll agree are killer

Chrome Kids Classics # 1

ROOTS MANUVA - DREAMY DAYS (SFA DUB)

Think it’s time we started reliving some inspirations and aspirations on this blog. Some of the tracks that have helped to shape the Chrome Kids musical outlook over the years. We move so fast now that some may take issue at how quickly we call classic on some of them, but those people will simply have to keep up.

Now Roots Manuva’s first album was a classic slice of Hip-hop, his second defined him and stands as a milestone in modern music. But it is actually the accompaniment to this album, the remixed package that we dig in for our first taste of history. The SFA remix of ‘Dreamy Days’ was the first track we heard off what is arguably a superior offering to ‘Run Come...’ and although it would be unfair to the rest to say it was our favourite, it does have a special settlement between our memory banks and earlobes.

We have nothing but respect for the fellas from Super Furry Animals. It was Gruff Rhys’ wanderings into the favelas of Brazil that first brought Baille Funk to our attention some years ago, and they have been constant supporters of the Welsh hip-hop scene over the years. Not to mention the fact that they constantly push the accepted boundaries within their own music, not scared to do as they please.

Over recent times they’ve shown more than a passing interest in the Dubstep scene, and it’s not really surprising when you listen to this slice of digital dub that came out back in 2002, just as the term Dubstep was gaining wider useage as the genre’s accepted label. Nowadays it would definitely settle comfortably under that umbrella, as would many of the other tracks off the ‘Dub Come Save Me’ album.

This is a Job for Forensics

My head is currently being ripped apart by dissertation research, so I am extremely grateful for the deep and thoughtful Dubstep served up in a new mix by Forensics which has been keeping me focused for the last 40 minutes of study.

Forensics' own productions start the journey perfectly as they feel their way around the dark dub caves, drifting deeper into sweet melancholy before toughening up somewhat and getting kinda angry and tribal as it heads guns blazing into mystical territory like an Amazonian redevelopment programme. Finishing a few thousand leagues under the sea in a final battle with the Titan Terror Fish armed only with a set of submarine speakers. .. or something like that... okay maybe the mix hasn't kept me that focused on work after all.

Look out for Forensics' Exile EP coming soon which features Indi Kaur, Phaeleh & Not In My Name and a third album which is in the pipeline. Plus you can still pick up his last two albums (Zero Billion and The Singularity) on Digital Sin.

Music To Make You Stagga

Just been delivered some fantastic tracks from DJ / Producer Stagga. I can’t believe that no labels have picked any of this mans dubz up yet! There’s been a few DJs on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra playing his stuff and Mary Anne Hobbs dropped Predatory Control Freaks in her Sonar Festival set, so it’s not like nobody gets what a sick producer he is. Still it means that I can post up some absolute treats for you with Stagga’s blessing that are all still officially fresh.

Stagga is also part of Hip-hop crew Dead Residents (whose ‘Pacman…’ track I posted up a couple of days ago) and has been performing / producing alongside Monkey (who was also up on here recently) as Optimas Prime for some time. Stagga gives many of his tracks a great traditional dub flavour but can also match Monkey with his sick and slinky, bass butchering beats on apocalyptic dubz such as 2012 and the War Of The Worlds Dub.
