Following on from his Drunkerdz single, our man Monky has a new EP out on Robox Neotech called A Thought which is the proverbial piss that rains down on anybody who attempts to make tunes without first processing their thought pattern through a quantum head space like our Chrome compadre... in other words this is the business! And so to celebrate Monky is giving away this free non-EP track, which Radio 1 new music Guru and Bestival Head Honcho, Rob Da Bank quite rightly said is "friggin' wicked."

Rather apt that it took us til St David's Day to upload our Welsh bass music mix for BBC 1Xtra to Mixcloud. If you haven't downloaded it yet take 20 minutes to go have a listen. Nearly alll the artists are from our home town of Cardiff and this scene is buzzing right now. There's no 'sound' to our city as such, but that diversity is what makes it so good. We shall all be back in the motherland next Monday for a gig at Buffalo with Rusko so if you're in the area make sure you reach.

Also whilst we're on a Mixcloud tip here's some of our favourite recent mixes from the site: First is DJ ID from the excellent Bass Music Blog setting something of a marker for where Breaks / Bass music is at right now; some hyper-filth from Kanji Kinetic courtesy of the Trouble & Bass crew; and BBC Radio 1 keep things moving even quicker than we do with two of their mini-mixes from SBTRKT and Four Tet.

From conception to birth, we have to admit we always feel rather like proud parents when we finish a mix, however with this latest in the series there’s a different kind of family pride. Aside from the obvious patriotism that swells from the fully Welsh line up, the fondness with which we regard out peers and the quality of music they have provided here hits the heart like a sibling football team winning the world cup.

When we were approached by 1Xtra to represent our motherland we were asked if we could possibly include some Welsh tracks. When we told them that we planned for the whole mix to be made up of artists from Wales they were surprised that such a feat was possible. Such misplaced surprise and ignorance is the reason why this mix is so important to us.

Not that we particularly mind being overlooked and mistaken for a nation whose musical output doesn’t stretch far beyond Guitar based Rock and Male Voice Choirs, we’re well used to that by now and our own media have always been more than supportive of the Hip-hop, Dubstep and Drum N Bass scenes here. There is a limit however as to just how much incredible music we can keep to ourselves. Let’s face it, it’s just not fair to the rest of you. So here is a quick fire tour of friends and family, mainly Dubstep with a nod to the Hip-hop and post-Hip-hop output of artists such as Squid Ninjaz and the Associated Minds crew.

The mix is meant as more of a showcase than a straight up seamless blend so keep the tracklisting at hand and make sure you look up the artists you’re feeling the most and if you reckon we’ve missed someone out, then make yourself heard so that we don’t make the same mistake next time.

I'm greatly looking forwards to next Friday where I'm about to enter a head to head clash with one of the best DJs out there, DJ Moneyshot. Possibly not a name that springs instantly to mind for you guys, especially the straight up Bass heads out there but he's a favourite on Ninja Tunes' Solid Steel radio and before he set off to the land of Oz for a while had a quality show on the now sadly defunct XFM Wales with his long term back to back buddy Parker (it's Moneyshot trying to explain the "state of the zookeeping industry" on Where's My Monkey?).

Although I shall be dipping into many a chrome plated tune the music policy is most likely to be more fun and funk driven (for more serious sets look out for Kaptin Is Dead) with plenty of crate digging and mash ups going on. This selection from DJ Moneyshot should give you some idea on the general vibe, couple have already been getting love from Huw Stephens and Rob Da Bank on BBC Radio 1.

Soooo. Right let's get straight to business as we show you the best way to spend your next 3 hours. Firstly is the latest mix from our Chrome Kids compadre Monkey. As you might expect from his productions, Monkey is the deep, soulful fella of the crew and this mix proves that to perfection. Laced with future funk, deep uptempo grooves and a touch of fried filth this is guaranteed to put your emotions on spin cycle; next we have a promo mix from SkisM from the Never Say Die crew who are dropping some seriously scorching remixes of the Foreign Beggars & Noisia track No Holds Barred by Excision and Affinity, and if that wasn't enough the release also includes remixes of Get A Bit More from Baobinga, Demus & Randomplay and SkisM; and also on the promo tip are the guys from Pipedown who are putting on a helluva line up of exciting artists this Wednesday at the Rhythm Factory including James Blake, Om Unit, Greena and Elijah & Skilliam. As we abstained from last Monday's Mixtape session due to political reasons we have made up for it by giving you a bumper addition this week which includes: our very own Quantum cadet, Monkey with a Dubstep selection he mixed up for 3zee1's show on Sub FM last week; a Take Flight Club mix from Doc Daneeka, who we first came across through his nights at the Monkey Bar in Swansea although we didn't make the link to his latest alias when we first heard Metabeats dropping some of his UK Funkier than though tracks recently; next is Metabeats' Darkhouse Family bredren Don Leisure with the first of a new monthly mix series, dropping some seriosuly tasty Liquid Soul and Future Hip-hop. We then hop over to South Africa as Liver gives us a homegrown mini mix selection from Cape Town and finally, a firm favourite of ours and the first to actually introduce us to Liver, Boom Monk Ben with a killer selection, something of a fusion of all the other mixes in one handy helping.

As promised, bit of a Monday Mixtape special this week as we bring you... Us.

We did this mix for Adam Walton's Mystery Tour show on BBC Radio Wales. Adam's been a strong supporter of many Welsh Dubstep and Hip-hop crew over time, infact he's been a strong supporter of pretty much every good Welsh band out there full stop. He let us run rampant for half an hour and this is the result. We kept it in Dubstep territory this time but with strong Hip-hop and Grime overtones. Starting with the big bass monsters, smoothing out a touch then getting twisted before leaving you on a high note. With a couple of original productions from crew members Monkey & Stagga.

The Chrome Kids are yet another act on the roster that are going from strength to strength. If you didn’t already know, TCK DJ Sets are made up of three emerging stars, all in their own right; Kaptin, Monkey and the rising Dubstep star, Stagga.

If they’re not hosting Radio 1 shows, they’re gallivanting around Europe unleashing their bass rumbling, gut-churning eclectic sets comprising of anything from Glitch Hop to Dubstep to Acid Crunk and everything in between. If you haven’t had the aural pleasure of these guys, get over to their myspace to check out some of their DJ sets.

It’s not only their DJ sets that have been pricking the ears of the taste-makers; their music blog has been getting attention from absolutely everyone and their dog! With Diplo dropping comments, P Diddy twittering links and Loo & Placido, the Godfathers of the Mash-up scene claiming it introduced them to Dubstep and Glitch hop, you can see that with in its first year, the blog has reached every corner of the globe. It recently appeared as the primary source for Hip-hop / Electronic crossovers in an article for ‘the biggest Hip-hop Magazine in Europe, Germany's Juice Magazine and even a few Radio 1 DJs have been keeping their eye on it and playing featured tracks on the airwaves. We have some extra special goodies for you from The Chrome Kids. Not one, but TWO FREE tracks for you to feast your ears upon. First up, a track from someone everyone is talking about, the man that brought you the dubstep masterpiece Sick as Sin, Stagga. Rub on ya Bass Binz is a track like no other and has been a staple in TCK’s sets for months and you’ll only understand why once you click on the link... Number two is a collaboration between Monkey & Stagga called Glass Bong. A fine example of the sort of twisted beats and bass you can expect from one of the trios DJ sets.

This is something a little different for us but I pledged some time ago to support Pete Lawrie any way possible, which means here he is. Definitely a hell of a shift since I first met a young DJ / Producer by the name of Itchy Fingers at our Higher Learning nights about 6 years ago. Since then he's proved himself to be a talented multi-instrumentalist but it wasn't until I discovered he could sing that he really blew me away. Gone is the Hip-hop moniker and sound, in comes one of the most refreshing singer / songwriters I've heard in a long time. Now signed to Field Recordings, an Island Records subsidiary and home to King Blues and Yoav, he is due to drop an album later this year. This recent version of one of the album tracks featuring Mercury Prize winning emcee Speech Debelle popped up a couple of days ago, but seeing as we're not the first ones to bring it to you, we've also given you an exclusive twisted tribal Dubstep remix from one of the Chrome Kids family of another track.

So I see that the wider student fraternity in the UK have finally caught on to Dubstep. Whether this is a good thing or not remains to be seen.


Wednesday night saw the busiest Dubstep only event in Cardiff with a packed Glo bar bouncin' to Monkey & Stagga, Elephant and Slipperz, Magenta and what should have been Rusko, no doubt the main reason so many students had descended on the night when most Dubstep weekly struggle to muster 20 to 30 people. Rusko was ill but N Type put in a killer set as replacement and despite most of the crowds ignorance to who he was, the atmosphere was real good after only a slight booing session at being told Rusko was a no show (all respects to MC Reuben for turning them round as well), and to be honest most of the Dubstep DJs and Producers in the place were happier with the change.

Can't say the same positive things about the crowd in Bristol unfortunately. Was speaking to Superisk who tells me the crowd at Thekla on Friday were pretty usual for the city these days. Didn't even realise it was a Dubstep night til I turned up, had decided to jump off the train early on the way back from London and made my way there to find out that Virus Syndicate and Benga were both playing. All good except for the fact that the boat (yes Thekla's a boat) was rammed full of student wannabe rudeboys with the biggest fronts I've seen at a club. I couldn't believe the amount of times I heard "Yo Blud" at full volume from some middle class kid with his cap sideways, arms up in the air and cheap cocaine up his nose. This coupled with the not so aggresive students who were far too busy stumbling round in K Holes meant space was a major issue and nobody seemed to be sharing their's happily.

We ducked out early after Virus Syndicate, who were decent in an Emcees over Dubstep kinda way, rather than as a performing group, which would have been better to see in my opinion as not enough people have that style locked at the moment. But we ducked out before Benga and headed to a house party where I picked up these videos from an early morning, last ones at the party YouTube swapping session. Thought I'd share them with you lot just incase there were any you'd missed.

Second up is some of the Life4Land fellas on a bit of a squatters Hip-hop tip with SMB. Only really know Ed Cox out of Life4Land who's their co-founder and accordian player and makes crazy Gypsy Breakcore type stuff. Definitely worth looking into if that seems like you're style.

Two of our favourite Dubstep producers Monkey & Stagga have now officially joined the Chrome Kids family and will be going out alongside Kaptin deejaying under the Chrome Kids name. Anyone in the Wales area should already be familiar with their skills as Dubstep DJs, not to mention they're classic Hip-hop / Bashment sets as Optimas Prime but now Chrome Kids will also be incorporating the kind of music found in the blog. So depending on what night they play you can expect some Glitch Hop, Dubstep, Bmore, Grime and just any generally dirty bass heavy Hip-hop based badness. Thankfully their new album Triple Crown is one of the finest slices of digitized Hip-hop this side of the solar system and this is a rare (and not to be missed) chance to catch them live and direct.
