We Love Unicorns!

From Chrome Kids and the oddball MC who taught us 'How To Be Cool' last year, Th' Mole's 'I Love Unicorns' is an unlikely rap song withheart, guaranteed to make anyone crack at least a small smile.

Setting himself apart from the slew of 'hipster hop' Th' Mole is a truly unique individual, as he proves irrevocably with the b-side track 'Shocky Guy Go' which features Asian strings, symphonic arrangements and lyrics rapped in an imaginary language.

In addition to remixes of the title track by Robot Koch (Kitty Yo/K7), The Flying Skulls (1320/Daly City), and up-and-coming producer Frietboer, there is also a printable Th' Mole paper doll included in the download!

Pick up a copy from Bandcamp now.

Th' Mole: I Love Unicorns maxi-single - 01. I Love Unicorns (Robot Koch Remix) by magicalbass

Even Radio 1 music supremo and Bestival overlord had to agree that "This is immense". We believe the Robot Koch mix is due to be his tune of the day today, however he is knee deep in Bestival line up announcements (The Cure, Primal Scream, Brian Wilson, Magnetic Man, Crystal Castles, DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, Norman Jay, LFO, Omar Souleyman, A Trak, Katy B, 65 Days Of Static and Pantha Du Prince so far... blimey!) so may have slipped by for today.

Vie Festival

From 2nd – 9th October, Run Vie, Vienna’s Hip Hop, Street Art & Electronic Music Festival returns to the city. Unfortunately our German is a touch too basic to tell you all the details but we certainly recognise enough of the acts playing to know it’s gonna be a good one. From Derrick May, the Detroit Techno pioneer to Stone Throw’s new Soul slinging Golden Boy Aloe Blacc, plus a particular penchant for such Chrome favourites as Free The Robots, Dorian Concept and Robot Koch, there is definitely enough exciting music in store to make us consider a road trip. To further outline this fact, Run Vie have put together a free compilation of music from some of their line up, with help from Carharrt, one of the Festival’s sponsor’s. Here’s the tracklisting and a link to go grab it.

01 | JR&PH7 ft. Oddisee - Fast Lane Speedin’(Philta’s Reboogie)
02 | Swede:art - Snapshots On A Sunday Night
03 | Marvwon & Brenk Mill Ticket

07 | Aloe Blacc - I’m Beautiful
08 | Yosaku ft. Bobbito - Malembe (7-Inch Edit)

Robot Koch - True (Video Preview)

Here's a little taster vid for our Berlin based amigo Robot Koch's new EP Listen To Them Fade which is out next month. Some of his most beautiful productions to date which Lorn from the Brainfeeder crew described as 'like watching mountains melt without LSD'. A fair summary we'd say.

Robot's In Da Skies

Robot Koch is currently sailing the seven seas spreading the gospel of digital bass music to the world, including a stop off at the legendary Low End Theory night in LA on Wednesday. However he dropped anchor long enough to tell us about a new remix EP he has coming out in late February with remixes from Loops Haunt, Flako, Blue Daisy, Shlohmo, Body Language and Phon.o (see below) as well as 2 brand new tracks. So consider yourselves duly warned and make sure you prepare for the coming!

Acid Crunk Anyone?

We mentioned it before but it's finally dropped and it is indeed as weighty as we'd expected. One of our favourite genre descriptions for the crunked up bass tearing, digitally mutated Hip-hop sound has to be San Francisco all round champion of it An-ten-nae's offering of Acid Crunk, especially with us all being fans of the twisted 303 dirt that Acid House gave us and which definitely has its shadows in the Hip-hop hybrid.

Now for their 50th release, Muti Music drops part two in An-ten-nae's Acid Crunk compilation series. Already hitting number one in no less than 3 of the Beatport charts (Dubstep, Electronica and Chillout, although which crazy bastard has been chilling out to these sounds we have no idea) this is a big compilation indeed and features such chrome favourites as Ooah, Gemmy, Robot Koch and Akira Kiteshi, whose Ulysses track from the compilation made it onto our Knowledge Me mix and thanks to those kind fellas at Muti is included for you here. If that's your flavour then make sure you pick up the whole thing here.

Download: Akira Kiteshi - Ulysses / alt link

Also from our mix and a late contendor for tune of the year (or maybe an early one for tune of next year) is Starkey's new single on Planet Mu featuring Brummie emcee Badness who manages to make what is ultimately a gal tune sound credible and not cheesy despite some rather suspect lyrics (apparently he 'shows luv better than he says' let's hope so for the lady's sake). Helped of course in no small way by the fluid futuristic funk of the Philly Dubstep don. You can pick it up now here along with a few dope remixes including one from our very own Chrome compadre Stagga.

Big In Berlin

When our bredren Stagga upped and relocated to Berlin there was certainly an emptiness around the corridors of Chrome Mansions, however we knew he was in good company with the likes of Jamie Vex'd, Robot Koch, Doshy and Kid606 all making lots of dope sounding bass heavy bleepy noises in the city. In fact with everything moving generally eastwards in Europe, it makes sense to be active at the gateway and so we're off to join our Chrome amigo for the week and properly check out Berlin. I'm sure there shall be many tales to tell and maybe even a couple of posts, but for now here's a little taster of what's fresh from the city at the moment.

First up we have this beautiful version of People Are Strange by Robot Koch and his wife Mimi de la Boheme.

This isn't for download yet but you will be able to buy a copy soon so no fear. We did however, just pick this gem up from Robot Koch's blog Robots Don't Sleep.

(YSI) Robot Koch vs Charles Mingus - Moanin'

Plus hot off the press is this slick, glitched up reworking of the classic Dabrye & (MF) Doom track with fellow Berlin resident Flako.

Next is a little taster of what Stagga's been cooking up of late too.

Finally we have two soundboy stomping mixtape selections from Kid 606. The first one he hit us up with the other day, and well the name pretty mich speaks for itself.

Free Package On How 2 B Cool

That's right people curb your anticipation we are finally ready to drop our second official Chrome Kids' Fre-Release. Once again we've teamed up with Daly City for a bumper pack of remixes of Th' Mole track How 2 B Cool.

There were two main types of kids at my school, those who were seen as being cool but grew up to be wife beaters and smack addicts, and those for whom cool was an uphill struggle until they finally left education and blossomed in later life. Th’ Mole might seem at first glance to be neither of these. He’s still very much the kid on the outside looking... well not quite in, but elsewhere… which of course is what makes him hyper cool. Not in a Mark Ronson ‘oh look I’m a little bit nerdy, aren’t I cool’ type way, Th’ Mole is the real deal. But have no fear, you don’t have to rock superhero style spandex outfits or make phat crunked out (and slightly tripped out) music to be cool ‘it’s really not hard there isn’t a trick’. To help you out, Th’ Mole has put together this handy 10 Point program.

10 Ways To Be Cool

1. When you're shopping don't just leave your groceries on the checkout counter while you shop. There are other people in the world besides yourself.

2. When driving, try to stay out of the fast/passing lanes unless you need to be there. You have the ability to reduce a lot of traffic, simply by letting faster cars pass you. When passing do it quickly and then get into a slower lane as soon as possible. (Even if you're at or above the speed limit, let people pass you if they want - you're not the freaking boss of the road!)

3. Tell your parental figures all of the things that you've ever been afraid to tell them, or as many of them as you can stand. Because it will help both you and them to grow.

4. Exercise every day. It keeps you healthy and makes you strong! Also, it will make you feel happier, and then you will be nicer!

5. Don't try to talk to someone while they're performing on-stage. Even if they're just staring at a computer, your intrusion may disrupt their performance. Also, just because someone is rapping on-stage, it doesn't mean that it's an open mic or a battle, so if you aren't scheduled to perform, don't try to.

6. Let your friends, relatives, co-workers, employees, employers, etc. know that you appreciate and/or respect them, whether it is with words, eye contact, hugs, or otherwise.

7. Babies are great, but if you decide to have one then you also have a responsibility. When you're in a restaurant or theatre or something, and that thing starts crying, take it outside. You should have known what you were getting into when you made it.

8. Also about babies, change your child's diaper as soon as it needs it. Don't try to pretend that you don't notice the poop smell, especially when you're in a public place. It's gross and inconsiderate. The same goes for letting your snot-nosed kids run around in public dripping snot all over stuff. We don't want your kid's disease.

9. One final parental note: don't yell at your kids in public. I don't think you should yell at them at home either, but unfortunately that's not my jurisdiction. But when your verbal abuse becomes a public nuisance then you definitely should shut up.

10. Say no to drugs!

Simple really, of course you could just download these remixes of How 2 B Cool by the kind of producers who make Fonzy look like Gordon Brown's brief case:

Ladyscraper who takes a break from his Gabbafied Breakcore excursions to drop a Breaky Dubstep-esque version; and Robot Koch (Jahcoozi / The Tape) who adds a slightly wobblesome bass in an Acid Crunk style - both of which give just the slightest hint of menace to Th’ Mole’s simple message of ‘don’t be mean and never tell lies’, kinda like, be cool, or else!

There’s also a remix from Th’ Mole himself who takes the chill factor down to around Blue Rasberry Slush Puppie plus Album Version Acapella & Instrumental. Don’t forget you can still pick up the original on Th’ Mole’s wonderfully colourful Greatest Hits (Ha Ha Ha) Vol. 1 album out now on Daly City Records.

Next up is a fantastic version of the Cher / Nancy Sinatra classic Bang Bang from Blondtron out of Canada, who have taken the instrumental from of our DJ 0.000001 Fre-Release as their base. A practice we wholly support, especially when done as well as this so get working on your own versions of How 2 B Cool people!

Mixtape Podcast Get Destiny's Child For Their Birthday

Have to say Happy Birthday to the Mixtape Podcast who celebrate their first year of being with some exclusive remixs from the likes of Something Wrong, Dirty Disco Youth and Death To The Throne. It's this remix of the Destiny's Child track Say My Name from Robot Koch that caught our ear mind. It's like entering the warped mind of Beyonce's Psychotic Stalker (metaphorically speaking of course, we make no such insinuations about Mr Koch). Grab the rest of their Birthday remixes at the Mixtape Podcast blog.
