The Power Of Zwolf

*image removed by request

With both feet an inch off the ground, his back against the curved walls of a cave on the outskirts of a silent town, zwolf is peering out of the darkness, staring directly at the cityscape as it slumbers. as the local children dream of a new day and it’s inherent possibilities, our mottled hero frantically arranges, arranges and rearranges the brittle 12 tones that lay in his hands, each eyeing an escape route, primed for flight… zwolf is a multi-introvertalist from an unknown location. weaving electronic lobeweapons out of old typewriters and plumage, the binary wizard refuses to tuneweld within confines of ‘genre’ or ‘acceptable behaviour’. on the road the combination of improvised beat-meddling and live scoring is a unique experience destined to leave the audience thinking they've just watched a film with your ears.

'The power of zwolf is a curious thing, Make a one man weep, make another man sing. Tougher than diamonds, rich like cream, Stronger and harder than a bad girls dream...'

We are more than pleased to have zwolf’s beautifully endearing Fake Death EP as our third official Chrome Kids Fre-Release. A selection of fine electronic based music that is as hard to pin down as it is to stop listening to. From the opening blues-nodding beats of Room For Doom, which despite the suggested absence of his one-time label mate and masked rhyme marauder is satisfyingly full enough; and the breakcore tinted murkiness of Dead Sea Scrolls, featuring UK Hip-hop stalwart Junior Disprol (Dead Residents); to the rolling glitch bitten beats that underlie the floatatious vocals of Martin Carr (of Boo Radleys / Brave Captain fame, who also has a new album Ye Gods (and little fishes) out on July 13th) on Soundtrack To Imaginary Film; and the jazzy sultriness of Red that sees an appearance from Cardiff Cabaret duo Mr & Mrs Clark (once likened to 'Terry & June on crack'); Fake Death manages to be eclectically polarised without losing its focus at any point and remains perfectly rounded introduction to the world of zwolf.

Tracks from this EP have already had BBC Radio support from Mary Anne Hobbs, Bethan Elfyn (Radio 1) and Adam Walton (BBC Wales) and whatever he might morph into next, expect big things from zwolf.

Bank Holiday Bangers & Mash Ups

The Bank Holiday Weekend has got off to a blazin' start here in Cardiff, both weather and night wise. Kicked off Friday with French Mash-up pioneers Loo Placido who've been literally mashing up the scene since back in '99 including making a bunch of tracks for the MTV Mash show, one of which Madonna performed live at one of her concerts. It's a scandal they're not better known over here but luckily Glo Bar was rammed to the rim and were more than impressed by the sounds emanating from two sets of mysterious shining red eyes bobbing around behind the decks.

They also hit us up with a copy of their latest mixtape, here tis...

Last night played a bit of back to back with Matt The Hat at his Small Weekend micro festival alongside Dead Residents, Dubious and Derwyddon Dr Gonzo. Think the funniest part was watching a few rugby lads who must have wandered in by accident and got extremely offended at The Doctor from Dubious shouting out 'I f**king hate you, you Welsh c**ts' during his performance (all just part of the act fellas). Derwyddon Dr Gonzo responded later with 'twll tyn cob sais' (basically 'up yours to the English' in Welsh).

Was a great night but slightly gutted about missing Rico Tubbs Vs Mickey Slim which was over in Glo again but managed to catch them both at an after party and I'm pretty certain there'll be plenty future face offs to come. If you haven't got a copy of Rico's Remix album yet then make sure you pick up a copy, here's a mix of tracks from it by the man himself that should let you know why. The album is part one in a series of 4 apparently so can't wait to hear the rest. Did have a mix due from Mickey as well but he's been locked away working on his own album that should be finished pretty soon. Sure we'll get one off him for you before too long though.

Tonight it's off to an open mic jam hosted by Shadow Law (aka Ming Dynasty and Redeye Knight). Ming's gonna be flinging down some of his deadly beats for whoever wishes to jump on the mic and ride them. The fellas will be up there doing their thing also. If anyone has a plan for tomorrow though let us know.

Enter The Dragon

Last night we showed off our roots a little bit and did a Welsh Hip-hop Mix for Rob Da Bank & Friends on BBC Radio 1. The mix is probably the most definitive yet for the Welsh Hip-hop scene and incorporates a wide variety of styles. It also shows that far from being an isolated and backwards country as many people in the rest of the UK, and even some in Wales itself would believe, we have emcees from all over the country, from all over the world infact who have congregated here and helped to add to that rich diversity. There are also some great collaborations by Welsh artists with emcees from California, Philadelphia and London on the mix too. Take a listen, we have also included many of the tracks for download via YouSendIt here as well.

Any questions about the artists or the scene in general then hit me up on whosthecaptain@hotmail.com

CHROME kIDS DJ DEBUT

Two of our favourite Dubstep producers Monkey & Stagga have now officially joined the Chrome Kids family and will be going out alongside Kaptin deejaying under the Chrome Kids name. Anyone in the Wales area should already be familiar with their skills as Dubstep DJs, not to mention they're classic Hip-hop / Bashment sets as Optimas Prime but now Chrome Kids will also be incorporating the kind of music found in the blog. So depending on what night they play you can expect some Glitch Hop, Dubstep, Bmore, Grime and just any generally dirty bass heavy Hip-hop based badness. For bookings email whosthecaptain@hotmail.com

You can catch their debut outing at the Swn Festival in Cardiff, Wales. A weekend event across the city curated by BBC Radio 1 DJ - Huw Stephens.

Chrome Kids will be playing on Friday 14th November at Tafod just over the river in Riverside opposite the Millenium Stadium. It's a strong line up which is co-curated by us. Here's a quick breakdown of the acts playing that night.

TAFOD LINE UP - SWN FESTIVAL - FRIDAY 14TH NOVEMBER

SKINNYMAN

Veteran and legend are perhaps titles that are too throwaway these days to show the amount of respect deserved by ‘the original Nort’ London dark heart dapper dan’ himself.Who will be performing alongside...

DURRTY GOODZ

An emcee who has been murdering beats in all shapes and sizes for the last few years and remains one of the most exciting microphone terrorists on these shores today.

(YSI) Skinnyman - When I Give My Heart To You

(YSI) Durrty Goodz - Switching Songs Part II (The Good Ol' Days)

KING CANNIBAL (Ninja Tunes)

Hailed as Ninja Tune’s new Dubstep signing, but such boxed limitations hardly do any justice to the many levels of dark and brutal digital bass driven beats explored on his new album Aragami Style.

(ZShare) King Cannibal - Cannibalism Mix 08 for Solid Steel / Alt Link / Tracklisting

TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS

Having served up some filthy electro remixes for the likes of Sugababes, DJ IQ (the mighty 8 Bars Of Fire) and of course the brand new remix of Foreign Beggars and Dubbledge's new track Gash (see below)and receiving Radio 1 support which included a live mix on Swn curator Huw Stephens show. The Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs descend on the night with a bag full of killer prehistoric dubplates made of granite.

(YSI) Foreign Beggars ft Dubbledge & Kyza - Hit That Gash (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Remix)

DEAD RESIDENTS

Having worked with the likes of Alkaline (Gunshot), Jehst, Cappo, Braintax, Task Force, Roots Manuva and Aspects you would expect big things from Junior Disprol’s crew Dead Residents (alongside DJ Stagga and Chud Jackson). Thankfully their new album Triple Crown is one of the finest slices of digitized Hip-hop this side of the solar system and this is a rare (and not to be missed) chance to catch them live and direct.

(YSI) Dead Residents - Smash Robot Vs Pacman Ghost

CHROME KIDS

And of course, DJ sets from a lethal combination of Welsh Hip-hop and Dubstep supremos MONKEY and STAGGA along with the party pirate himself KAPTIN who shall be holding it down for the digitally mutated bastard offspring of Hip-hop.

(YSI) Monkey - Join Us

(YSI) Stagga - Freight Dub

(YSI) Monkey - So High (No Vocal)

(YSI) Stagga - LSD User

(YSI) Monkey - Badness

(YSI) Stagga - Sick As Sin

Provisional times are as follows:

There will be more information on the Swn Festival in the next few days but for now you can check the full line up over at....

JOE BLOW w/ JUNIOR DISPROL & CERVANTIS - POETRY IN MOTION

Some brand new poetic agginess from Joe Blow's heavyweight EP 'Smoking Skills'.

Don't know the full story about this video but heard some of the fellas got caught up in the middle of a fight outside a club the night before filming and the blood you can see on the towel covering Cervantis' face belongs to Joe Blow's cousin who had his ear ripped apart by a knife. Cervantis himself could barely stand as he was run over by a police car in the madness.

Where's the Jungle?

A few posts ago I put up some tracks from a producer called Stagga. Well he also has a project alongside UK Hip-hop stalwart Junior Disprol and partner in rhyme Chud Jackson by the name of Dead Residents.

They have a new album dropping called Triple Crown and this is their first video from it Scumbongo in which they team back up with Ryan Andrews, the director of their last zombie fest video Boogaloo. This time a gang of twisted Super Heroes hold court at their secret Bingo hall Headquarters. It's rare to find such good club busting digital beats under the kind of flows that Dead Residents deliver on this one and it's a breath of fresh fire indeed. Take a set of speakers down to your local zoo, slap this on and watch 'the parrots get rago' and the 'rhinos get rago.'

Music To Make You Stagga

Just been delivered some fantastic tracks from DJ / Producer Stagga. I can’t believe that no labels have picked any of this mans dubz up yet! There’s been a few DJs on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra playing his stuff and Mary Anne Hobbs dropped Predatory Control Freaks in her Sonar Festival set, so it’s not like nobody gets what a sick producer he is. Still it means that I can post up some absolute treats for you with Stagga’s blessing that are all still officially fresh.

Stagga is also part of Hip-hop crew Dead Residents (whose ‘Pacman…’ track I posted up a couple of days ago) and has been performing / producing alongside Monkey (who was also up on here recently) as Optimas Prime for some time. Stagga gives many of his tracks a great traditional dub flavour but can also match Monkey with his sick and slinky, bass butchering beats on apocalyptic dubz such as 2012 and the War Of The Worlds Dub.

(YSI) STAGGA – PREDATORY CONTROL FREAKS

(YSI) STAGGA – FREIGHT DUB

(YSI) HUGH MUNDELL – JAQUALINE (STAGGA VS SCIENTIST REDUB)

(YSI) STAGGA – WAR OF THE WORLDS DUB (wav file)

(YSI) STAGGA – 2012
