Birthday Big Ups

Big thanks to everyone who made it down to our 2nd Birthday Party at Cardiff Arts Institute on Friday especially Mr Healan, Benjamin One, Blue Daisy and Monky for rocking some killer sets (and extra special props to Monky for taking it that extra mile). We also had a Squid Ninjaz invasion briefly as both Skamma and Joe Blow jumped up to do a couple of tunes, including their firing new Genik Riddim track and OK Luv, both with Stagga (OK Luv is a reworking of the Starkey track using the Stagga remix instrumental, should be dropping sometime in the future).

Also from Barry we had a newcomer to the scene, Beatbox Major jump up and smash it on the vocal instrumentation tip. Here's a couple of vids from the night, Genik Riddim and a little jam sessino from outside the club with Beatbox Major and Traxx from the Astroid Boys crew.

Cardiff Summer Round Up Part I

Things seem to be busy in Cardiff this summer and we've had a number of various gems from our home town which we keep meaning to post. Here's a selection of some and we shall post a bunch more on Tuesday. Hopefully you would have already caught the new Monky, Paul B and Dead Residents mixes we posted recently. If not grab them here.

A few regular readers may remember previous tracks from Cardiff based duo Shadow Law (aka Lex Umbra). Well producer / rapper Ming from the pair has just released a grimey Dubstep EP through Italian label Young NRG Productions that you can pick up now on Juno, Beatport, Dogs On Acid and Track It Down.

C.R.S.T. are fast becoming the number one Future Garage crew of choice, okay so the majority come from Barry rather than Cardiff but for arguments sake we’ll claim a 10 mile radius for our own. They have adorned many a recent mix including the opening track of Doorly’s new Reclaim The Dancefloor CD. They’ve also provided bubblin hot remix of the new Count & Sinden track featuring the Mystery Jets that Annie Mac recently posted on her site as a free download. Here’s that tune along with their latest mix and a few extra bits and pieces. Make sure you look out for their forthcoming releases on Car Crash Set, Well Rounded and Ten Thousand Yen.

Undoubtedly one of our favourite rappers from the scene, Blaktrix is due to drop his long awaited album Some People Never Go Crazy at the end of this year. As a warm up he has compiled a selection of unreleased and previously vinyl only tracks into a kind of story so far ‘mixtape’ called The Houdini Footprints of Some People Never Go Crazy. These tracks include a couple of Monky and Stagga’s earlier productions and the Monky ones in particular still bang hard, have a listen for yourself then grab the whole lot from the Blaktrix Website.

Finally for now, although Stagga has since relocated to Berlin he still has his hands and heart deep in the area as this new killer Grime / Dubstep / Hip-hop track featuring Skamma and Joe Blow from the Squid Ninjaz shows. This is ridiculously beastly.

Lost Your Marbles?

We already loved this Mumdance track enough to put it in our Knowledge mix but then he told us it was inspired by our old skool Cardiff amigo DJ Oddz (who sadly gave up Grime for God a while back) which made us love it even more, then the final icing on the cake was him letting us pass it to you guys in advance of his forthcoming EPs on Mad Decent and Trouble & Bass this Summer... it is now the best 'Kerplunk' tune we've ever heard (okay so it's the only one so far but let's not squibble on details).

Speaking of Cardiff, here's a sneak preview of a new tune from another of the city's lost sons you might just recognise (okay so he's not quite lost, just gone AWOL in Berlin).

New Mud / Meta Track Is Maaad Tight.

We've been looking forwards to the new Metabeats and Mudmowth LP for longer than is polite to have to anticipate anything but looks like the wait is nearly over and it ain't gonna be pretty. The first sign of impending destruction comes in the shape of this controlled explosion from a fearsome foursome. Riding the stutter funk production is three of the UK's finest: Sonnyjim, Mudmowth and Skamma and this tune gives us that warm evil feeling inside like lacing your mate's toilet paper with chilli powder.

Wha's Occurin'

Thanks to a certain popular sitcom Barry is finally on the map and has even tidied itself up a little bit over the past year or so, but it ain't all Gavin & Stacey in the small Welsh seaside town known locally as Basra. Still, just like the social problems in 70s South Bronx helped to spawn Hip-hop, there's a certain energy in Barry that keeps the culture going when all around scenes are dying off, albeit in a rather darker and sinister cerebral form that embraces rather than tries to escape it's surroundings.

Out of this raw creative scene comes the Squid Ninjaz family, consisting of heavyweight artists such as Metabeats, Joe Blow, Cervantis, Skamma, Cesto and a whole heap more both direct and extended family members. Mudmowth, Ralph Rips Shit, Ruffstylz, Dead Residents, 4Dee, Imakemadbeats and Beretta 9 from Wu Tang affiliates Killarmy, all make appearances on their impressive forthcoming album Revenge Of The Blowfish and make it one of the heaviest, grimiest and also most lyrically creative Hip-hop releases of 2009.

Check this Metabeats produced head cracker from the album that also features our man Stagga on the cuts and drunken style rants courtesy of another of our favourite new producers Shadow Law's Ming Dy Nasty.

You can catch most of the Squid Ninjaz live in the Cardiff area next month (see above flyer) alongside one of the most influential UK crews of the past few years, Task Force who I'm pretty sure haven't reached the city since their last controversial visit to Higher Learning near the start of the decade (except for supporting Super Furry Animals a few days later).

Unfortunately it doesn't look like honourary member Ramson Badbonez will be there, a man we've been watching rip battles since before he was old enought to enter them. It does however give us enough of an excuse to post up some of his recent tracks that have all found their way onto his blog in the past few weeks.

And hell seeing as we're on a UK Hip-hop tip, here's a couple of tracks from those good fellas over at HHC Digital who have made something of an impressive shift online after the sad, but perhaps over due demise of their printed version earlier in the year.

Stagga Drops Sick As Sin

As you might well be aware by now, Stagga drops his Sick As Sin EP on Rag & Bone next week (30th March). Gonna be gigantic, here's the press release for it:

"For their 21st release, Rag & Bone have pulled out all the stops. Welsh producer Stagga bursts onto the dubstep scene with a refreshingly new take on things. With a history in hip-hop and coming fresh from a debut release on Rossi B & Luca’s Rudeez imprint of ‘Jacqueline/Policeman Get Hype’, Stagga serves up 3 indisputable slabs of wonkiness.

Sick As Sin’ is the big hitter with it’s centrepiece phrase “Dropping you out like a bong of smack and waking you up like a bong of crack” courtesy of the vocal talents of Skamma: it’s got big tune written all over it.

On the flip ‘Predatory Control Freeks’ is a different matter altogether. Wise utterings on the sinister intentions of the new world architects drift in and out of an eerie soundtrack. Meanwhile ‘Freight Dub’ gets deep on a smokers vibe. It’s swathes of spooky synths blend perfectly with some hypnotic banter.

These tracks have already seen early support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Starkey (Planet Mu) and Sub FM DJs with more to follow."

Check Stagga's Myspace to hear these tracks, plus here's a little non EP special for you all too.
