Monday Mixtape Making Madness

Monday not treating you so great? Why not get all Arts & Craft and build a tiny set of decks from matchsticks, sticky backed plastic and bottle lids then place your MP3 player underneath out the way but plugged up to your computer speakers (if you have battery powered ones all the better). Dig out your favourite action figure from the box in the attic to act as a DJ, head out into the garden and use these handy mixtapes as sets to play to all the insects... they'll love it.

Or you could just sit at the computer and listen to this fine selection from Bullion (crate digging, chin stroking and beautiful); 1000names (futuristic, head nodding and seriously left of Saturn); or OM Unit (phat, funkalicious and full of All City releases past present and future, including his very own Lightgrids just released on the label) , they'll sound just as good but it's not quite as fun.

What's Growing In The Botanika Garden

Proving without doubt that there's more to Israeli dance music than Psy-Trance, the Botanika fellas have been bringing the funk in the most delightfully dirty of ways for some time, with their regular events in Tel Aviv featuring the likes of Kode9, Theo Parrish and Stereotyp, plus their Botanika FM podcasts.

Now they're making the most of their finely tuned eardrums by releasing some superb tracks under their very own imprint. Their first 3 releases include some warm and wobblesome Dancehall infused Dubstep from Sabbo, a funk stomping head nodder from Polar Pair alongside Shawn Lee and another Polar Pair collaboration with spoken wordsmith Atlantis from Detroit collective Underground Resistance that sits comfortably between Techno, Breaks and Disco.

The Godfather (Redub)

Our boy Parker has come up with some fine funkdafied goodies in the past, generally a tad too traditional for these pages but dope nonetheless. However when it comes to his interpretation of the Godfather of Funk himself he's gone rather Dubstep on us, albeit from a classic live stance in keeping with his general style. The track is part of a wider collection of James Brown 'regrooves' by Bristol based club night come label Goodgroove Records.

Fusing the soulful sounds of the 80s such as Rare Groove & New Jack Swing with a new skool off kilter Hip-hop sound and touches of House, Stevie J aka West London based beat maker, Funkineven 1956 steps nicely into the warm, fuzzy and funkadafied musical family that is Eglo Records alongside fellow siblings Floating Points, Fatima and Shuanise.

(YSI) Funkineven 1956 - You! / alt link

And seeing as we're steppin' into that Gilles Peterson / Ross Allen type territory with these it's a good excuse to drop a couple of Seiji tracks aimed at the other end of the dancefloor, some dope Broken Beatish bounce alongs. Now I know there's some emcees out there that could jump on these and bring a bit more of our flavour to them, you might even find a few more over at his blog too.

Just Let Your Soul Eglo

Quite a jazzy, soulful affair for us Kids but lovin' the swing on this dreamy little slice of North London Street Funk from Eglo Records' new signing Shuanise Odunaiya, who says her music "is a fusion of everything I love: synth sounds, heavy bass, high frequencies, African choirs, crackling vinyl & talking drums". That could be why we love it too.

Can Mujava Make Your Mum Dance?

I don’t know what the current club situation is like near you but here it is rather dire. There are many reasons for this, looming recession, smoking ban, etc. But one of the reasons I hardly venture out these days is a lack of exciting artists. Promoters are scared to put on upcoming artists cos the people hardly ever turn up if they don’t know who’s playing, so they put on the same old worn out acts that lost their edge when they fell off it. It’s a vicious circle, but all they need to realise is you simply have to work harder. If people don’t know who you’re putting on, tell them, over and over and over again. It’s still a gamble true, but if you’re not excited enough to tell the world, how can you expect others to be excited enough to spread the word and actually brave the cold and come on down.

Thankfully I was speaking to a promoter the other day who is looking at booking some people who might get us excited. He’s just booked Rico Tubbs for New Years Eve, a fantastic DJ and a fine conker player, plus a few others pencilled in for the coming months. He’s also been listening to our Chrome recommendations so hopefully we shall some our favourites start to pop up. One artist he’s looking at but not quite sure on what vibe he’ll bring is DJ Mujava, Warp Record's new signing out of South Africa. His Township Funk single is a killer and has been popping up everywhere for months but nobody seems to have seen him DJ. The single doesn’t really point at where the set might go. He comes from a Kwaito background so maybe he’ll be bringing that, but much as we love it here at Chrome Kids the scene’s not exactly massive in Wales. So if anyone out there can vouch for Mr Mujava and his party rocking skills please give us a shout so we can let this promoter know.

One DJ we shall definitely be recommending is Mumdance who has just started reaching out on a live DJ / MC tip with long time partners Jammer and C Gritz. Here’s a jam they all put together down in the XL studios chopping up Township Funk and Debonair Samir’s ‘Samir’s Theme’ to ride over.

Nu Soul Old Money

As well as the fantastic mix we put up the other day, the guys at Attorney Street have put us onto another project fromOld Money (Cambridge, Scheme and Konrad), with New York soul crooner Lance Drummonds. It’s called Scareapeutic and it should drop in the next couple of weeks.

They hit us up with a quick preview, a funkified electro swing fest called – The Willies
