Bambooman has been a fringes favourite of ours for a while now but London based Segilola is a new artist for us, one we're more than grateful to King Deluxe for introducing us to and releasing this stunning single, due out in the new year.
Hoping that the rest of her tracks and production choices stand up to this, certainly look forwards to hearing more.
New album from Detroit Hip-hop crew Clear Soul Forces just dropped today. Saw them in London last night, they might be a little raw and unrefined in places but their skills are undeniable and what they might lack in polish, they make up for 10 fold in unbounded energy, passion, character and general youthful exuberance. Been a fan for a little while now and any Hip-hop head should find something refreshing in their music.
Here's a couple of our favourites from the new release but you can buy a copy here or stream the whole think over at Okay Player.
One of our favourite blogs You Can Call Me Pelski is hosting a night in London on Friday with a suitably sick line up of guests. Rustie and Roska are both well known to smash up a dance but this mix from The Boog-A-Loo Crew shows not to sleep on them either. With the blog's very own Charles Darklyto complete the line up this is set to be a scorcher and what's more it's all totally free if you get there before midnight.
Geeneus – Yellow Tail (VIP) DVA – Ganja Bassjackers & Apster – Klambu Mosca – Square One (Julio Bashmore Remix) Jazzanova – I Can See (Don Daneeka Remix) Pariah – And Thoughts of You Still Cross My Mind Jose James – Blackmagic (Joy Orbison Remix) Cinnamon Chasers – Luv Deluxe (Scaba Remix) Greymatter – Believe In Somehting (TRG Remix) Dark Sky – Leave Fantastic Mr Fox – Brandy The xx – Crystalized (Dark Sky Remix)
With a new Planet Mu album on the way and the killer OK Luv single with Badness doing damage, we expect some big things from Starkey and that whole liquid digi-funk Dubstep sound in general this year. To highlight the case in point of the lion going from strength to strength Fabriclive are moving him up from the usual Room 3 spot to take on Room 1 for the first time on Friday the 15th of January alongside: those legendary Fabric mainstays, Scratch Perverts; Reggae stalwarts, the Trojan Sound System; and the cool and deadly Tayo. They've also sent us this dope 1Xtra mix that was originally broadcast on Redlight's show.
Anyone in the London area on this date should definitely check out DJ Vadim's show. We've been big fans since USSR: Life From The Other Side back in 1999 and he has consistently brought out incredible material since before then til now. In fact here's one of our favourites from 2003.
Managed to miss these guys at every festival (those who've read my reviews won't be suprised at that) but I've been assured by friends that they are definitely ones to watch. On the strength of what we've heard so far and this monster of a new track, they're certainly ones to be listening to at least. We've included a 160kbps MP3 below but you can buy the full 320 for just £1 (as well as copies of their album at £5) at their shop.
Master Shortie is perhaps the most moralistic out of the bunch today, he's from the school of look but don't touch, not even a bit of extra dirt from our good friend Mr Chew Fu can corrupt him, although we're not sure she'd fall for the old 'looking like a samosa' line anyway.
Next is a bit of sleazy Electro Hip-house from that rather rudely monikered German Fukkk Offf who is up to no good with his rapping friends Razor Cain & Hazel from New York.
"You're with your girl, I'm with my man but can we be more than friends."
Not quite sure if it's a bit of sneaky cheating or full on group sex that they're on about but with something of a reputation for rocking parties in Hamburg's Red Light District, we guess it could be anything. Taken from the Love Me Hate Me Kiss Me Kill Me album.
Sexy Brazillian duo Blood Shake bring some breaksy Electro flavour to this Baile Funk track from equally sexy, and almost downright slutty The Fire and Reason. Taken from the Shakes forthcoming first album Ghetto Dirty Lovers.
With a big pot of tribal electronic beats for the streets L-Vis 1990 has just dropped this new mix to warn anyone planning on visiting Fabric in London this Friday (June 5th) that things are going to go off in Room 2 on a monumental scale.
It's something a little different from what we expected after his extremely cheeky bootlegs have found themselves a heavy rotation at Chrome Mansions. Although his dirty and deep UK Funky style is still noticeable in there at some places, there are times when the mix sounds like an Endor forest battle against the Imperial Stormtroopers transplanted to somewhere in the Congo and at others like a full on lunar rave up (in the best possible way of course).
Quite a jazzy, soulful affair for us Kids but lovin' the swing on this dreamy little slice of North London Street Funk from Eglo Records' new signing Shuanise Odunaiya, who says her music "is a fusion of everything I love: synth sounds, heavy bass, high frequencies, African choirs, crackling vinyl & talking drums". That could be why we love it too.
Been a while since we had any B'more on the blog so it's about time we remedied the situation. XLR8R.com just gave us a heads up on their latest podcast from the Chavy Boys Of London. A Baltimore 'supergroup' consisting of Scottie B, Shawn Caesar (co-founders of Unruly Records) and King Tutt. Not quite sure where the name comes in, sounds more like a Bassline crew to me, but who cares. This is a damned fine mix.

The 'prom' at our school sucked. The punch had no alcohol in it and our dates didn't know how to dance. To add insult to injury, the house band played nothing but R.E.M covers...Badly.
This monthly party: SPRAY is here to make up for every sucky excuse for a prom that you've had to endure. There's some great acts like:
If you wear a corsage or a bow tie you get in on the cheap. Then you can sign the 'Class of '08' sig-wall, then go and pull a goofy face while your posing for your styleslut yearbook picture. There's even balloons!
You know when you go to a party and everybody's dancing, getting phone numbers and basically having the time of their f*cking lives? Probably not, because that sh*t doesn't really happen anymore. Well, that's what 'SPRAY' is all about..
Not really much to tell from Carnival… drink, dance, get squashed, lose people, dance some more, eat, drink some more and keep dancing til it’s time to go. The general pattern doesn’t really change. Of course there’s a lot more you can say about it but if you’ve been, you know and if you haven’t then I couldn’t begin to explain it here. Let’s just say there’s no better way to spend a Bank Holiday Monday.
What was missing for me this year was a Carnival ‘tune’, something fresh that you hear over and over again. To be honest we kinda got herded around sounds that just pumped out the classics and finally settled at Gaz’s Rockin Blues (dressed up the best as always - this time with an 'Around The World in 80 Days' theme) watching a ska band called The Trojans. Not really inspiration for a Chrome Kids post but good fun nevertheless and some great guest slots from Ska saxophonist Megumi Mesaku, the legendary Prince Buster and one of our favourite rappers Mystro…actually he’d be perfect for a post. Here’s two videos for two of the best Hip-hop tunes this year.
Mystro - U Live & U Learn
YesKing feat. Mystro - One Of Those Days
The first is from his now mythical forthcoming release on Beer & Rap the ‘Fuck Da Taxman EP’ which will hopefully see the light of day soon, and the second track is from Mark Rae / Rhys Adamsproject YesKing off their ‘Rock This World’ album which is also slightly mythical thanks to their distributor going bust after releasing just a few hundred copies and not letting go of the rest. Definitely worth checking if you can find one though.
I shall hopefully be reaching down to catch the last day of Notting Hill Carnival on Monday but for those who want to start early then I’d suggest heading to Man Make Music down at the Rhythm Factory over the other side of London for their annual carnival party, this time featuring two stalwarts of the bass community Glasgow Glitchmeister Rustie and B’more UK Ambassador Jackmaster.
Support comes from grime crew Man Scandalous Unlimited and resident DJs Sketchy and Another Amit.
Here’s a quick Dubstep mini mix from Another Amit consisting mainly of hyperdub
