Kaptin V Moneyshot: Head To Head

I'm greatly looking forwards to next Friday where I'm about to enter a head to head clash with one of the best DJs out there, DJ Moneyshot. Possibly not a name that springs instantly to mind for you guys, especially the straight up Bass heads out there but he's a favourite on Ninja Tunes' Solid Steel radio and before he set off to the land of Oz for a while had a quality show on the now sadly defunct XFM Wales with his long term back to back buddy Parker (it's Moneyshot trying to explain the "state of the zookeeping industry" on Where's My Monkey?).

Although I shall be dipping into many a chrome plated tune the music policy is most likely to be more fun and funk driven (for more serious sets look out for Kaptin Is Dead) with plenty of crate digging and mash ups going on. This selection from DJ Moneyshot should give you some idea on the general vibe, couple have already been getting love from Huw Stephens and Rob Da Bank on BBC Radio 1.

Our First Official Fre-Release

Hello, Good Evening and Welcome to our very first official Fre-Release (no not a Pre-Release, not a Re-Release... a Fre(e)-Release). We've linked up with the fantastic Daly City Records (Mochipet, Th' Mole, Flying Skulls, Preshish Moments) for two single releases from DJ 0.000001 (below) and Th' Mole (on May 4th) that we're bringing to you in the spirit of the blog, absolutely free. We also have EP releases lined up for Zwolf and Stagga, with plenty more waiting to be confirmed. So without further ado...

You should all by now be familiar with the good old DJ friendly Mash-Up. They’ve long been a staple of many a party set, in fact, so long now that it’s about time they were taken to the next level… well thank f**k for DJ 0.000001 [one-millionth] then that’s what we say. Following on from his widely acclaimed releases on Mochipet’s Daly City Records label: Ooh Baby I Like It Hard (an infectious Ol' Dirty Bastard / Matty G / Glitch Mob remix single); and the Whirled Fusion Mix Tape (featuring Th' Mole), comes this brand new big, bad and banging ‘Thrash Up'. 10 tracks that would happily fit into a killer 40 minute set are fused together into one mighty morphing power stomper of a track in the shape of We All Fall Down.

Squeezing the essence of such Chrome Kids favourites as Milanese, Kraddy, Nasty Ways and K-The-I??? into 3 minutes of phat future funk totality, We All Fall Down moves fluidly between the beats and melodies but hits harder than an iceberg being dropped on your cranium. We couldn’t think of a better track for our first official Chrome Kids Fre-Release, plus it comes with an even DJ friendlier acappella and instrumental (which is also handy for the radio) so you can ‘thrash it up’ even further yourselves.

Credits:

Milanese "The Plague" +
Pharoahe Monch "Simon Says (Acapella)" +
Lil Wayne "Lollipop (Nasty Ways Remix)" +
K-The-I??? "400 On The BPM" +
The Cool Kids "88" +
Too $hort "Burn It (Instrumental)" +
Art Of Noise "Moments In Love" +
Noreaga "Super Thug (Instrumental)" +
Benga "26 Basslines" +
Glitch Mob "Crush Mode" (Kraddy "Android Porn") +

Marching On

Our inbox is over flowing at the moment so it's time to play quick fire round catch up with a few of our favourites...

P.B. & J - N T W A from PoL.L on Vimeo.

First up the fantastic new tune from those those swinging Swedes Peter, Bjorn & John gets the Troublemaker golden re-touch with rhymes courtesy of Adam Tensta, U-N-I and The 87 Stick Up Kids. The original track lends itself to Hip-hop so well that after a few listens you'd swear it was always like this.

There's some heavyweight Little Boots remixes about at the moment but think this one from Old Money might be our favourite so far. It's fairly faithful to the uptempo swing of the original but is less Bashie and more Hip-hop Jive-stepper. We've been playing the Ebola Dubstepish remix of this a fair bit too. Not sure if we've put it up already but here it is again just in case.

Grime Forum just dropped their first in a series of free Grime / Dubstep EPs. Here's the tracks but for plenty more info visit them here.

That 'devilishly' good Dutch producer Don Diablo utilises the same Funkadelic sample as the suggested classic De La Soul track for this dirtified Discofest.

Happy that Arkansas rapper 607 just gave us a good excuse to include the sublime avant-garde Folkish troop Animal Collective up on the blog.

London Chavs in Baltimore

Been a while since we had any B'more on the blog so it's about time we remedied the situation. XLR8R.com just gave us a heads up on their latest podcast from the Chavy Boys Of London. A Baltimore 'supergroup' consisting of Scottie B, Shawn Caesar (co-founders of Unruly Records) and King Tutt. Not quite sure where the name comes in, sounds more like a Bassline crew to me, but who cares. This is a damned fine mix.

Can Mujava Make Your Mum Dance?

I don’t know what the current club situation is like near you but here it is rather dire. There are many reasons for this, looming recession, smoking ban, etc. But one of the reasons I hardly venture out these days is a lack of exciting artists. Promoters are scared to put on upcoming artists cos the people hardly ever turn up if they don’t know who’s playing, so they put on the same old worn out acts that lost their edge when they fell off it. It’s a vicious circle, but all they need to realise is you simply have to work harder. If people don’t know who you’re putting on, tell them, over and over and over again. It’s still a gamble true, but if you’re not excited enough to tell the world, how can you expect others to be excited enough to spread the word and actually brave the cold and come on down.

Thankfully I was speaking to a promoter the other day who is looking at booking some people who might get us excited. He’s just booked Rico Tubbs for New Years Eve, a fantastic DJ and a fine conker player, plus a few others pencilled in for the coming months. He’s also been listening to our Chrome recommendations so hopefully we shall some our favourites start to pop up. One artist he’s looking at but not quite sure on what vibe he’ll bring is DJ Mujava, Warp Record's new signing out of South Africa. His Township Funk single is a killer and has been popping up everywhere for months but nobody seems to have seen him DJ. The single doesn’t really point at where the set might go. He comes from a Kwaito background so maybe he’ll be bringing that, but much as we love it here at Chrome Kids the scene’s not exactly massive in Wales. So if anyone out there can vouch for Mr Mujava and his party rocking skills please give us a shout so we can let this promoter know.

One DJ we shall definitely be recommending is Mumdance who has just started reaching out on a live DJ / MC tip with long time partners Jammer and C Gritz. Here’s a jam they all put together down in the XL studios chopping up Township Funk and Debonair Samir’s ‘Samir’s Theme’ to ride over.

Time To Run Riot

A huge bigUP to Juan de Fukyah for waking us from our ignorant sleep and bringing Run Riot Records into our lives. We've been scouring their blog for latest releases and we have found some absolute gemstones.

First up is by DJ Mutamassik, a New York raised ‘Producer/ Musician/ DJ/ Artist/ synesthete and pioneer of the Sa’aidi Hardcore & Baladi Breakbeat Sound.’ Who has been up on top of a Tuscany hill in her Cave Studio putting the finishing touches to her new EP which is due to drop on New Years Day.

A fine and heavy tune, kinda like the soundtrack to a robotic bear being highly magnetised and then having to stomp through an industrial kitchen.

(Direct Link) DJ Mutamassik- 5x8 Cell

Next is from the Touching Further EP from Kitimat out of Canada. Can only really describe this beauty as dirty evil fidgit crunk… yup that would pretty much sum it up.

(Direct Link) Kitimat – Shiftist

Plus check this killer remix too (not on the EP)

(Direct Link) Fabolous - Do The Damn Thang (Kitimat Glacial Mix)

Couldn’t give a better description then RRR themselves for this next track from the new Gouseion LP ‘Nijikon’ – “In the turbid, breathy arpeggiators of Caps 13 come lurking pauses, the gaps in the data collapsing themselves into gasping slow jams, sweat condensing on a water-cooled case.” Exactly.

(Direct Link) Gouseion - Caps13

And if you like this then check his latest Mixtape out too

(Direct Link) Gouseion Mixtape V (zip)

Now a killer tune from the Artemis Jackson EP ‘Asps & Adders’ that dropped earlier in the year. Right up our street this one, can’t believe we let it pass us by til now. Glad we’ve been given a chance to rectify that, you should make sure you don’t let it get by you either.

(Direct Link) Artemis Jackson - Asps and Adders

Finally this glitchy little headnodder from their newest signing, Brooklyn based YSLE, off the forthcoming Gain Fed LP, is verging on classic Detroit Techno / Chicago House. Or as RRR so finely put it once again “In the twisted, barb-wire whip funk of Radish Patch, synths syrup over icy hats, follow stomping bass drops into echoing strips of hazy deviations, turn around on themselves suddenly like androids dancing to thriller, smearing and jittering apart as the sounds stretch across the breaks like silicon taffy.” That was the one…
