Due to the crazy last drops of summer, we've been shamefully sitting on this remix of the Deftones track Prince from the big bad Bassnectar camp for a little while. We have however, been moshing out hard to it since then, so thought it only fair to share it with those of you yet to pick it up. As with the CLAW remix of Change, it seems the Californian rock mongers suit the heavier side of Dubstep perfectly. Perhaps a new direction for their next album is due, there's certainly space for more Rockstep tracks.



Speaking of Bassnectar, keep an eye out for the new EP dropping on October 19th, with 6 brand new songs, plus remixes. Also, Mister Gray from South Florida hit us up with this dope little bootleg mixing up Teach Me How To Dougie by Cali Swag District with Bassnectar's Basshead. It's kinda fun, check it out.

If you happen to be in San Diego you may have caught Monky doing his thing over the weekend already but he's not done with the West Coast of the USA just yet. He will be playing out above Paradise Lounge in San Francisco tomorrow (Wednesday 9th)and The Airliner in LA on Saturday 12th. It's his first trip out there to DJ so if you're any place close make sure you reach out and show him some love.

In true exchange student fashion, back here in Chrome Mansions we've been listening to two of our favourite West Coast amigos. Bassnectar and Troublemaker (or rather his crew King Fantastic and their new album which is....erm... fantastic).

With less wobble but just as much weight as his club destroyers, Lorin from Bassnectar hit us up with his new remix for Sleigh Bells that carries off a summer floaty vibe but with a rather menacing undercurrent.

Despite these travels, everyone will be making it back to the UK for a full Chrome Kids line up at Glastonbury this year. Friday night 1am at the Bassline Dome in Shangri La.

Funny how some bands get properly arsey about sampling still. If it wasn't for Hip-hop it would probably have taken me a whole lot longer to venture into my father's jazz collection, and many a great band has been discovered due to seeking out a sneaky sample. Part of it is translating the material into a language the new listener can understand. Once that barrier has been broken down it makes the next conversation, that could be alot more intense, a hell of a lot easier to digest. For example, I've never been a Metallica fan. It's not that I don't like or respect them, they just weren't in my radar growing up and so my tastes were defined by different cultural markers. However I have been a massive Bassnectar fan for a while now (essentially the music represents the combination of a number of my youthful music loves) and with his latest bootleg he has translated Metallica's Seek & Destroy just perfectly into a headbanging, foot stomping slice of pure unadulterated Crunk Rock.

We've also been sent this rather epic gift in the shape of Glitch Mob's new remix for French Electro producer Krazy Baldhead. Rolling in at 9 minutes long, this is probably where Funkadelic would be now if George Clinton had discovered computers instead of crack, only without the rainbow headed genius on vocal duty.

By now, those of you with a penchant for gnarly basslines and swaggering bruiser beats may well have picked themselves up a copy of the new Timestretch EP from the West Coast master of such styles Bassnectar, which was due out this week but dropped early as it escaped from the Beatport cage like the Kracken in Clash Of The Titans. In his first official mix for 2 years, Bassnectar comes at us from every direction firing proton pack funk into the speakers and not giving a f**k whether he crosses the streams and lets some big marshmallow bass into the arena. Actually marshmallow makes it sound alot fluffier than it is, this is pure filth with influences flying in from Dubstep, Hip-hop, Drum N Bass, Reggae and that Carnival full of Gypsies that rode into town when you were young. There's some original Bassnectar tracks, some re-edits and some friends along too. So steal a tank, strap a stack of speakers to the side and roll into town blasting for a full force 44 minutes and 25 seconds of heavyweight fun.

Couple of Hulk Hop heavyweights pile in with all guns blazing today. First up is the mighty Bassnectar who fixes up the Pixies' Where Is My Mind? into a killer slice of Crunk Rock. George Lenton meanwhile is on similar grounds with his Phar Phar Dec wobbling, bumping and grinding more than a fat hooker on horse tranquilizer. Loving the Big Pun breakdown in the middle too, massive!

The guys over at Adult Swim who always have an ear for great music have teamed up with the Timbaland co-prduced beatmaking game Beaterator to bring some incredible remixes of Atlanta Hip-hop artists by such global leaders of the new school as Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Starkey and Dabrye. As promised, bit of a Monday Mixtape special this week as we bring you... Us.

We did this mix for Adam Walton's Mystery Tour show on BBC Radio Wales. Adam's been a strong supporter of many Welsh Dubstep and Hip-hop crew over time, infact he's been a strong supporter of pretty much every good Welsh band out there full stop. He let us run rampant for half an hour and this is the result. We kept it in Dubstep territory this time but with strong Hip-hop and Grime overtones. Starting with the big bass monsters, smoothing out a touch then getting twisted before leaving you on a high note. With a couple of original productions from crew members Monkey & Stagga.

It's rare that we ever post album reviews on here (infact I think the first post may have been the last time). Mainly because it is rare that we ever get the chance to give whole albums more than the once over anyway. However there are three that have found themselves on rather constant rotation here at Chrome Mansions over the past few weeks so it's only right we give them a special mention.


Bassnectar’s studio must be next to David Banner’s laboratory cos these beats have definitely been mutated by some kind of gamma force. This is what you might call Hulk-hop of the highest order, his mix of Dubstep and Glitch hop is weightier than almost anybody else out there. The beats here are about as in your face as it gets without slipping into alienating noise clash territory but there’s an element of future phunking bounce that keeps the general vibe as frolic full as a free party in a Fun House. There are a number of thoughtful and reflective moments throughout that certainly qualify this as an album proper rather than simply a collection of bangers, but even these are backed up with massive dirty spine rumbling production and we can’t help but feel that the speakers are going to fall through the floor at any moment.

The UK Hip-hop scene was perhaps one of the most self destructive musical environments since Norweigan Black Metal, albeit in a completely non-descript and straight forward manner. The spirit of creativity and invention that first spawned the so-called worldwide cultural phenomenon that is Hip-hop was seemingly forgotten amidst restrictive unwritten rules and tedious in-house bitching, something that occurs everywhere, but when the house is so small it becomes even more tiresome. Egos inflated the second an artist was recognised in his local corner shop and the majority soon got lazy and ended up in the deflating paradox of looking back to the good old days and realising even they were actually a bit shit. To put it plainly, everybody, listener and artist alike (generally one and the same anyway) got bored and eventually boring, everybody that is except Foreign Beggars it seems.

U.C.O.B. oozes with the excitement of a crew that are truly in love with their art. If there was ever even a second of boredom amongst them it must have soon been quashed by discovering some of the most exciting producers in the game and getting them to provide the base (or is that bass) for their collection of fun and thoughtful flame roasted rhymes. Their ears are obviously in all the right places as this is one of the best all round Hip-hop albums of the year so far bar none.

The more negative cultural commentators amongst us may feel that the rise of computer intelligence, somehow goes hand in hand with the dumbing down of human intelligence. Computers imitate humans whilst humans imitate computers and get locked in the lifecycle of a robotic drone who can’t think for themselves or even feel for themselves and simply follow a monotonous and shallow pre-programmed objective. This is perhaps as over dramatic as it is pessimistic but not even the ones who feel this way could view the musical interaction between man and machine that has come crawling out speakers from LA to Glasgow and many a spot inbetween, finally to end up in this compilation, as anything but thoughtful, emotional and as organic as it is technically advanced. Wild Angels is a collection of tracks that blurs the boundaries between Hip-hop, Dubstep, Techno, Jazz, Folk and a bunch of left leaning beat genres with tenuous titles. All carry as much warmth as they do a disregard for the rules and a beauty that is often caught within sharp, dark and aggressive surroundings. You can certainly see how the title fits. This is not necessarily for the uninitiated but those familiar with the output of Mary Anne Hobbs Radio 1 show will recognise some of the bigger and more forwards thinking names on a scene of increasing relevance that she has gathered here.

Only just found out that Jack Beats is actually Plus One from Scratch Perverts and Beni G from Mixologists, two of the best DJs out there during my Hip-hop days and now by the strength of their forthcoming UFO EP, two of the best dance music producers of the moment too. This is the kind of dirt that we're craving for the dancefloor right now and so we're grateful to Dizz & Draz for dropping us this bootleg of new Jack Beats track Labyrinth and the Beat Assassins remix of Tittsworth's WTF. We've also been sent a whole load of new Bassnectar tracks which are so big I'm not sure how to keep any of them out of our next chart. Why there isn't the love that is due to Bassnectar in the Dubstep world over here is beyond me, definitely a firm favourite. Unfortunately for you guys we can't share any of those but we do have a bootleg they knocked up on more of a laid back Hip-hop tip with a couple of their unreleased tracks and a Lupe Fiasco track. This isn't the club destroyer that the rest are but if the bass in your car stereo is weighty enough then give yourself a few minutes to go cruising round the block with this one cranked up loadly.

Dubstep seems to be how Troublemaker satisfies his dark side. One moment his tracks are Electro floor fillers and bass heavy Hip-hop hands in the air head nodders, then out of nowhere he'll drop some moody nastiness like this. The quality still remains constant throughout though so we're certainly nor complaining.

Nobody seems to know where this tune appeared from or have any information on it at all. A scan of our inbox reveals nothing. Whoever it was though deserves a major big up though because Kids In Tracksuits provide some gnarly as hell Hip-hop beats that give Mr Lif a new lease of life. Guessing this is a new track and it's good to see the Kids back on fine form, much as we love the Lone solo stuff this kind of toughness can be rather more satisfying at times.

Regular readers to the blog should know about Troublemaker by now, but the first time we caught him was on a remix of Camp Lo's Luchini alongside fellow Hollyrock co-hort Tatelarock, know they bring double trouble once more to De La Soul's classic Oooh, a timewarping fusion of Hip-hop eras that takes the focus off the floor and turns it into a subtle Electro stepper.

Also taking it back whilst keeping that future flavour is this track from JDP, which has a similar feel to fellow Chi-Townites The Cool Kids. Guest vocals come from Swedish rapper Adam Tensta, who also featured on the Troublemaker remix of Nothing To Worry About which we posted up the other day (see the linkage working here).
